Being a diabetic should not be a valid reason for any employer not to hire you. It just doesn't make sense. Many of my friends have diabetes and are gainfully employed. If an employer turns you down for that reason then I would check with Civil Liberties to see what you could do because this is definitely discrimination.

As was mentioned in another reply it is illegal for people to not employ diabetics just on that basis.
Actually it shouldn't even be mentioned or brought up during the interview process by the person applying for the job nor the employer.
However certain jobs that require physicals as a part of the hire process it is more difficult because due to the job requirements a diabetic may not be well suited.
On cruise ships even there are waivers that prevent diabetics from participating in certain activities due to possibility of blackouts and liability on the cruise lines. Many diabetics live successful healthy lives but the ones who don't manage their disease bring risks that many places don't want to deal with.
As for the possibility of being able to do work non diabetics do, absolutely. Unfortunately even if you do take good care of your diabetes you're still at increased risk for infection etc and need to be careful which lines of work to take so as to not increase your own risk of infections etc.

You have to tell them you are diabetic if you want to be covered on their insurance. And once they find out you are diabetic they start seeing dollar signs. It cost more to keep a diabetic healthy with all their medicines and supplies. Try to get an individual policy. No way, a diabetic is considered uninsurable. You can't win either way. So find a place that doesn't offer insurance and go to work there. That is about all you can do until the insurance companies become reasonable about diabetes. (In our dreams!)

I don't know, I didn't see your first question, but diabetes is no reason not to hire someone, unless they are looking at the cost of their health insurance premiums going up. I do know that some diabetics do not take good care of themselves, but most do because they don't want the complications that arise from uncontrolled glucose levels. Maybe if you showed them the results from your last HbA1C test (if it's under 7.4) they would see that you are serious about keeping your disease under control. I don't know of anyone who thinks its contagious. I bet it has more to do with the cost of health care insurance or some other liability insurance than anything else.

It's against the law for a company/person not to employ someone because of a medical condition/disability!!
I have family & friends with diabetes (both diet & insulin controlled) who work and function like none-diabetics.
As far as I know, it's fairly easy to control when you know what you need or to do so why should it stop people working?!

My son is 28 year old and has been an insulin diabetic since the age of 6. It has never stopped him doing whatever he wanted to do. Many different sports, went to Uni and now working full time.
If it can be proven that you are being rejected because of your diabetes, contact the your local jobcentre for guidance.

I can not think of any job that a person with diabetes would be unable to carry out. Even people with Type 1 diabetes, who have to inject themselves with insulin, are able to work normally. Diabetes is a condition not a disease, there are complications associated with it but these can be controlled without unduly affecting work performance.

well iretired from the government and i have not heard that one. i know there are some that are diabetic that are so sick they really can't work. but i am not sure what percentage that is. if you are old that is one reason. but generally there are some young people out there that can get into coma real easy so its just knowing what your limiations are. i have never head of that employer not hiring because of that its against the law by the way to say that.

Maybe diabetes isn´t the issue... maybe they just didn´t think you were qualified for the job.... or did they really give you the impression that they cared about your diabetes? If so, that illegal and you can report them for discrimination.
