Wikipedia is pretty much completely wrong in the subject of vegetarianism...that definition may look OK... but everything else they have to say about vegetarianism is wrong. It seems as if it was written by non-vegetarians...but who knows.

Next time you want to learn something about vegetarians, get your information from a vegetarian website. I'm sure there is no one better to tell you what a vegetarian is than an actual vegetarian.

As for using dairy…
Vegetarians do not eat meat (including fish and birds). They may or may not include eggs/dairy/other animal products in their diet.
Someone who excludes all animal products (milk/eggs/ other animal products in addition to meat) would be considered a vegan or a strict vegetarian. Vegans, in addition to being vegetarian, do not use other animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products.
This is the VRG definition of what a vegetarian is/does.

For the literal definition of the word vegetarian... You would look at the first part "veget" which comes from the Latin root word "vegetus" (meaning healthy, lively, vigorous) and then at the Latin suffix "-arian" (meaning believer in, advocate of, applies to a lifestyle). Together they make "Veget+arian" literally meaning "healthy lifestyle" or you could define it further by saying that a vegetarian is "Someone who creates a healthy, LIVELY lifestyle by eliminating Dead things (animals-meat) from their diet".

The only reason I told you all this crap(because this is obviously not answering your question) is because I see people using words like pesce-vegetarian to describe different "types of vegetarians" These words (pescetarian, pescevegetarian) are incorrect... since a vegetarian doesn't eat ANY type of animal. That is why I said wikipedia is wrong... they promote the use of these idiotic words (pescevegetarian, etc.) It is just plain wrong.

OK so finally to get to your question... :]
I choose not to use dairy products, eggs, and of course I don't eat meat... A lot of other people do the same.
So yes, there are vegans in this world...
Vegetarians choose whether or not they want to consume dairy and eggs... so someone that consumes dairy but does not eat meat... can still be considered a vegetarian.

Hope that helped and that it wasn't tooooo long and confusing...

Vegetarian means you do not consume the flesh of ANY animals, and that includes fish. If you eat fish, you are NOT a vegetarian. Vegetarians also do not consume gelatin, which is made from the bones, hooves, and hides of slaughtered animals. Vegetarians do consume dairy products and eggs, but they have to watch out for rennet in cheese.

Vegans avoid animal flesh, dairy products, eggs, and anything else that involves the exploitation of an animal. This includes silk, wool, leather, fur, bee products, products from companies that test on animals, zoos, and circuses.

It's as simple as that.

The word "eschew" means to avoid something.

The statement from Wikipedia means "vegetarians don't eat animals. Some of them eat dairy products and eggs, some of them don't." I think the WIkipedia definition is accurate.

Some people do say they are vegetarian but eat fish, chicken or other animals. I don't agree with them and I wish they would stop calling themselves "vegetarian" but I guess I can't do anything about it.

My whole family was vegetarian except me part time. You can drink and eat egg cause you are not killing the animal. As long the cow wasn't hurt in the process for the milk and the egg wasn't`t fertilize. You are not killing any life at all.

However some soft chewy sweet contain gelatin that is oil from the cow which involves killing thus all vegetarian cannot eat it.

Interested to be vegetarian? =/

There are a few different types of vegetarians out there:

Ovo-lacto Vegetarians avoid almost all animal products with the exception of Milk and Eggs.

Pesco Vegetarians avoid everything except fish.

Then there are the Vegans. They don't eay ANYTHING that comes from an animal... (not even Marshmallows... since the geletin is made from the hooves).

These people use Soy milk rather than cow milk, some kind of vegetable oil-based spread rather than ghee or butter.

not everyone eats dairy ..I never do, my kids dont. I dont see the harm in eatting crab lobster snails or squid or any mollusks since they are genetically related to the insect family and arent emotional beings. I dont eat that often but am not opposed to it. I dont drink cows milk simpley because its not healthy not because bessy is abused.
