I'll be 50 soon and will be planning my own party. It sounds pathetic, but I am a widow with a 4yr old. He doesn't have the finances to do it. Ha Ha. Anyways, I have a brother out of state and my parents and in-laws have passed. So... I thought I would write a letter as an invitation keeping it on the light side. I saw an idea for a time line and thought that may be fun to do. But I feel funny doing these type of things myself. Close friends live too far to help. What is too tacky? Any ideas for the party or how to go about planning it?

If you feel uncomfortable then have an OPEN HOUSE for your 50th Birthday Party.

That takes away the stigmatism that you are throwing yourself a party...

Happy 50th and trust me turning the big five OH --- it doesn't hurt one little bit

Send out the invitations with the warning that it is a surprise party and that nobody should tell you. Also, have all of the returns come to you. That should put everybody in an interesting, and confused, mood. Announce that presence, not presents, are expected. Instruct them to park around the corner so as to not let you realize what is happening and that you will leave the door open for them to assemble and surprise you. Let them know what time you will arrive for that surprise (and come in then). Leave the drinks and hors drovers out for self service. When you walk in and everyone shouts "surprise", overact the surprise. Invite neighbors, people from work, and people from any outside activity to which you belong. Have a blast.

Happy birthday first of all!
kris and michael both have good ideas but Michael ,youre a card! a surprise party for yourself!lol how wonderfull is that!
I would probably do a more subdued dinner type party myself inviting close friends and family.
just decide what you want .what fits your personality and go for it.
If throwing yourself a party is too strange for you and your finances can stand it hire a party planner or have it catered.
or enlist one of your far away friends to come a couple days early to be the host.
anyway good luck and have fun.
peace<><
