Why do some people say they are vegan when they eat honey? Honey is an animal byproduct and if you eat honey, you are not a vegan. I even know this one lady who has a leather belt hanging in her closet ad she still tries to lie and say she is a vegan.

Why do people say they are something when they are not?

Sorry, you are rude sometimes. Maybe they see things a little different than you or they do not know. Have you discussed this with her. Maybe she had the belt before she was vegan and doesn't wish to through it out or maybe her daughter gave it to her if she has one. Maybe it reminds her of someone she lost.... any number of things that she may not have felt was any of your buisness. Maybe she just doesn't choose to discuss the validity of her veganism with someone as judgemental as yourself... What do you think...
Could be that she is just saying that so that she can relate to you and have you as a friend..... get real.

Get off your high horse!

Why do you care so much about the beliefs of others???

You try and force people to go vegan and now you're condemning those people who actually make the effort but just so happen to eat honey!

You're a vegan... well congratulations! That doesn't automatically give you the right to judge other people. Being a vegan doesn't mean you are in some kind of morally righteous club.

In your little world everyone has to live exactly as you do. I really don't understand how you have any friends or a boyfriend for that matter... or are they just make believe people who live in your perfectly vegan world?

There are different degrees of vegan and ultimately it is just a word. I am a strict vegan but I may accidentally step on an ant... I'm sure there are some buddhist monks that are so careful with their actions that they don''t even do that. Do they condemn me and say I'm a 'fake vegan'? No! Because they respect the way different people live... something you seriously need to learn how to do.

being vegan is basically saying you are a very strict vegetarian. there are many sub headings under the term vegetarian but we just seem to take them at face value. honey is made by bees, but they are not forced to make honey, they make it anyway and are not caged up all day long so if they wanted to escape they could!

that lady you speak of may have had the belt made from an animal that had already died of natural causes.

there are many vegetarians out there that still eat meat and justify it in this way.

i think that some person saying they are vegan when you believe they are not is the least of our worries in todays world. there are far worse things to be focusing on dont you think!

Ok, cows make milk to feed their babies, chickens lay eggs to have babies. I can understand that. I understand thet conditions that layers live in, I understand that babies are killed for cows to give us their milk, but making honey is THE purpose of bees lives! Maybe she bought that leather belt when she wasn't vegan, and just hasn't thrown it away! You really need to stop being so proud, high and mighty, and start thinking about other people instead of saying you're perfect. Because I'm 105% sure you're not. Get yourself in line. Plus, some vegans eat honey. some don't. Their motives are not your problem, so deal with your own life.

Honey is the sticking point--a lot of people don't think of bees as animals, although they are. And a lot of people don't know of the abuse inherent in the honey/beeswax industry. The abuse of cows confined for their milk (or should I say their babies' milk) and hens confined for their eggs gets far more attention in the vegan community. People are going to care more about cows and chickens than they do about bees.

As for the leather belt, it's quite possible she had it before she decided to go vegan. Some vegans will do that, use their nonvegan goods up, and when they replace it, find an animal friendly alternative.

I am lacto vegetarian, and I must admit that I do get annoyed when someone says "I'm vegetarian, but I eat chicken and fish."

I'm not sure if all vegans agree on the honey thing, though.

I have heard some people say they don't drink alcohol, then I see them drinking alcohol. I have seen people who say they are Muslims, and they drink alcohol and eat pork. I know Jewish people who eat pork. I know Catholics who say they use birth control and openly criticize the Pope.

People are often inconsistent; maybe it's just part of being human.

Honay makes sense, it's a matter of how you define "animal".
If you go by a strict scientific definition bees are animals.
Kingdom animal, with worms jellyfish and us. But in most countries bees are not legally animals, you would not be charged with animal abuse for holding bee fights and you don't have to apply for ethics approval to do experiments on them. In the UK and Australia the legal definition of "animal" (in terms of animal rights and animal ethics) is vertebrates (mamals, reptiles, birds, fish ect) and Cephlopods (Squid and Octapus).
So there is some consistance in the ethics for eating honey but not milk, eggs and meat.

Leather is another matter, 3 main reasons for this one.
1. "I only ever said i don't EAT animals!"
2. "I bought it before i was vegan"
3. "It's a biproduct of the meat industry, no extra animals were killed for it" (Not sure whether this last one is true, but it is pretty dodgy ethically and factually.)

The most important one you have left out is GELITIN, in sweets (candy) and jelly (jello), it is made from animal (mostly mammal) bones, hoofs and horns, a lots of vegitarians and vegans either don't know this... or pretend they don't.

There are also lots of other products that contain animal derived materials, such as film which contains gelitin (i had avegan friend a while ago who would not let anyone take her photo unless it was with a digital camera), some glue, and some skin treatments contain shark liver oil (listed as "Squali Lecur" or "OLEUM SQUALI") and many other cosmetics contain animal fats or oils.

Who cares? Why would anyone be offended by a poser vegan? Maybe they had the leather from a long time ago and didn't want the leather to go to waste. That animal should not have died in vain.

Well some vegans don't eat honey and don't wear leather stuff. Does that make them vegan? I think it does.
