So, I 'm preping Sunday Dinner...and it's T-storming outside and I realize I'm all outta Romaine lettuce..so...I'm forced to use the head of Iceburg outta the crisper. As I'm tearing through it (the lettuce) I'm like, what is it? Why is it called Iceburg?

The name Iceberg comes from the way the lettuce was transported in the US starting in the 1920s on train-wagons covered in crushed ice, making them look like icebergs.

I was actually thinking about this the other day. This isn't a real answer though, just a thought I came up with the other day. Maybe it's called Iceburg lettuce because it's as healthy as a piece of ice. You don't get very much out of it. I won't ever eat the stuff unless it's like on a sandwich and I have no other kind of veggies.

It is called Iceburg lettuce because it was served for dinner on the Titanic the night it .....well, hit an iceberg.

Iceberg lettuce got its name from the ice-filled train cars in which it was shipped by California growers a century ago...
