Several years ago, I gained a lot of weight although I've been vegetarian since 1987. There were several contributing factors. My SO & I had just got together & we were dining out way too frequently & often having alcohol as well. I had some health issues (*not* diet-related) that made me very inactive over the course of several months & I've got a habit of "comfort" snacking when I don't feel well, get stressed or depressed etc. It took a couple years to gradually lose the weight but the scales are pretty much tipped in my favor now.

yep. heathy and vegetarian are not exchangable. Although you are more likely to be health conscious as a percentage of the population if you are vegetarian... it is not always the case.
Example. When I look at the label of everything I buy to eat... While I am scanning the label I also look at the nutritional information while I am back there. I avoid things with too many additives or high fat content etc. It is something that I naturally do that I never did when I wasn't conscious of ingredients.

The lead singer of Fall Out Boy is pretty chubby for a vegetarian.
I've never seen a vegetarian who was completely obese though, like most of the people I see in their SUVs in the McDonald's drive through.

Yes. Just because some is a vegetarian does not mean that they eat a healthy diet. They can still consume a lot of calories and carbs and vegetable fats.

i guess the reason why vegetarians tend to be slimmer is prehaps they are more aware of what they're eating. They could possibly go for a higher calorie version of a meat-included meal, but i think generally vegetarians just put more thought into what they put in their mouths.

Yes.
Vegetable oil is still oil, even worse trans fats from partially hydrogenated oils are generally considered to be more of a health risk than those occurring naturally.

i have seen overweight vegetarians and vegans. I also have seen very thin hard- core meat eaters. It has a lot to do with your metabolism, your body type, and your eating habits. Also the amount of exercise one gets.

There is nothing about vegetarianism per se which should predispose to thinness, but I would guess that most veggies probably tend to have good health habits overall.
