I have a friend, she is very attractive, but unfortunately she has herpes... I believe it is genital herpes (but not certain) anyway, we have a sexual tension between us, but I am not going to have sex with her, but she feels it would be ok to have Oral sex, well for her to give me oral sex.

It seems like it wouldnt be a problem.... does anyone have experience or knowledge in this situation?!?! because I will be very thankful for anything that helps !! I think you know why...lol... please let me know!

thanks, AJ

Yes, herpes CAN be spread from oral sex.

If a person has a cold sore and gives another person oral sex, then the person "receiving" can develop genital herpes.

Also, if a person has genital herpes and someone gives them oral sex, the person "giving" can develop cold sores (oral herpes).

Cold sores are usually caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1), but they can also be caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2).

Genital herpes on the other hand, is usually caused by HSV2, but it can also be caused by HSV1.

Herpes CAN be spread from the mouth to the genitals and vice versa.

I'm absolutely appalled by the majority of these answers. People, if you aren't educated on a subject, don't answer a question about it.

Having herpes doesn't mean someone's a "skank" or "used up". It's not like you become at risk for it after you've been with a certain number of people, and quite a few people contract it because their partner was unfaithful.

To answer your question AJ, yes, you can get herpes from oral sex IF the person who is giving oral sex has oral herpes. My advice to you is to think long and hard about how you feel about this girl. If you really see a future with her, find out what kind of strain she has. Talk to your physician about prevention, and keep in mind that in ANY sexual relationship you enter, there is a potential of catching herpes (no, condoms don't prevent spreading herpes 100%, just like they're not 100% effective against pregnancy). The only difference with this one is that she obviously cares enough about you to tell you the truth. The virus itself isn't really that bad, but it's very difficult to deal with emotionally. It'd be nice if all of those morons out there would actually do a little research before opening their mouths.

God there are some ignorant people on here!

If her herpes is genital, it is located solely in her genitals and can't be caught from her mouth if she gives you oral sex. No possibility whatsoever.

It is possible she has genital herpes and oral herpes - many people do - but why don't you ask her?

If her herpes is oral (cold sores), she can give you genital herpes by giving you oral sex. That is possible even when she has no visible sore. Having said that, so can 80% of the population so is it such a big deal? If you are one of the 80% infected with oral herpes (usually type 1) and she also had the same type, the likelihood of you getting it from her is extremely low.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

Prevention
The suggestions for preventing genital herpes are the same as those for preventing other sexually transmitted diseases. The key is to avoid being infected with HSV, which is highly contagious while lesions are present. The best way to prevent infection is to abstain from sexual activity or to limit sexual contact to only one person who is infection-free. Short of that, you sexual contact to only one person who is infection-free. Short of that, you can:

Use, or have your partner use, a latex condom during each sexual contact.
Limit the number of sex partners.
Avoid intercourse if either partner has an outbreak of herpes in the genital area or anywhere else.
Open communication with your partner or potential partner is important.

If you're pregnant, be sure to tell your doctor that you have HSV or, if you're unsure, ask to be tested for HSV. Watch for signs and symptoms of HSV during pregnancy. Your doctor may recommend that you start taking herpes antiviral medications late in pregnancy to try to prevent an outbreak from occurring around the time of delivery. If you're having an outbreak when you go into labor, your doctor will probably suggest a Caesarean section to reduce the risk of passing the virus to your baby.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

STD's can be spread just as easy from oral sex as it can intercourse..find a new friend it's not worth it. Unless perhaps you truly love her and want to be with her forever. Once you obtain herpes you won't get any chick again bro.
