Not long.
Herpes is a virus and it needs a living host in order to live (unlike bacteria).
If you are worried about contracting herpes from a person who has touched something (like a toilet seat) - think again. It's NOT going to happen.
Herpes is spread by sex (vaginal, oral and anal) and by DIRECT skin to skin contact with an infected area.

I got diagnosed with genital herpes (type 2) about 7 years ago, while I was still in college and had a dumb one-night stand. I know a lot of young ladies will say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date guys again. After all, who wants to go out with someone that has sores round her private parts? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/bqcY0 everything got better.
Not only was I able to eradicate all traces of the herpes virus from my system in less than 3 weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just a week ago, in front of everyone in a busy cafe, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!!! This program provided me the chance to be happy and experience true love. Now I want to help you too by sharing this with the whole World.

Depending upon how 'friendly' the surface is to it, ie how damp, warm etc, from a few seconds to a few minutes, not longer. On a toilet seat a few seconds, maybe longer on a wash cloth etc.

I thought that it could only last a few minutes outside the human body, that's why you have to have very close contact to pass it.

The virus cannot live without protein bindings, so it generally will last until it is washed away or several weeks, if not washed.
