I'm 14 and I've been told that I have cholesterol levels of 30 pts. higher than normal by my doctor. I was wondering what cholesterol was exactly, how it affects me, and what it can lead to.
Also, could anyone tell me how or what to do in order to lower it back to normal levels. Thank you all so much.

Cholesterol is essentially fat particles in the blood. Over the years it can lead to clogged arteries, which would make a person at risk for stroke or heart attack. You should start a low fat diet, staying away from red meats and pork. Skinned chicken, fish, grains, fruits and veggies would be good for you. Stay away from fast foods, they are very high in cholesterol and can be very deadly.

there is good and bad cholesterol, the good cholesterol, called the HDL, can be increased with daily exercise and taking Co-enzyme Q-10 available at any supplement store.
The bad cholesterol, called LDL, is the sticking stuff the clogs your arteries over time and causes heart disease. To lower LDL naturally, you need to cut out all beef and pork, and dairly products from your diet for at least six months, and then eat them only sparingly. If your LDL is elevated because of genetics however, you will eventually require medication. Let me urge you to do as I have described and have your cholesterol checked again in six months and see if there isn't an improvement. It is nice to see someone your age concerned about her health.

Cholesterol is something in the blood about fat. There are 2 kinds of cholesterol: LDL, and HDL. One is good, one is bad.

Anyway, to lower it, you may be given medicine, but diet & exercise are best to try, first.

Do normal, healthy, exercise: aerobic, like walking, biking, swimming, etc. 20-30 minutes three times per week.

Diet: Don't eat fast foods! Eat smaller portions of what you used to eat. Eat almost all you want of: lean meats, fresh fruits & veggies, whole grains (oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat bread, rye bread), nonfat milk, beans of all types. Drink 8 glasses of water each day.

Ignore the total cholesterol number. It seem like your doctor is looking at total cholesterol when you are told to lower your cholesterol by 30 points.

What you you need to know is the ratio between the good HDL and the bad LDL cholesterol. If the ratio is in balance you do not need to lower your cholesterol.

14 is a very early age to have cholesterol problems. I'm sure your doctor gave your parents a nutritional diet to follow. Cutting back on sugar and fats will help but be sure you follow your doctor's advise and listen to you parents. I'm sure they are doing all they can to help. Also, exercise helps lower cholesterol. Brisk walks each day is excellent!
