For a large tent (8-10 people), which is stronger - a taller tunnel design, or a dome design?

Dome

Think about how the force of a strong wind would hit it. In most cases domes deflect wind well however a tunnel would have weak parts vulnerable to the wind

And dont buy cheap or chinese it you want it to last for more than one occasion!

That's hard to say. I have six dome tents and one tunnel tent. Only two of my dome tents will take high winds and my tunnel tent will also take high winds. Four of my dome tents are just not strong enough for high winds. The more poles and the more guy out points you have, the stronger the tent will be. A large dome tent capable of standing up to storms will be a lot more expensive than a tunnel tent that will do the same thing.

a dome tunnel tents are usually classed as valley tents, but if guy lines are pegged out right they do stand op to a fare bit of wind but a dome needs to be pegged out right or that will be no good in a strong wind,

the question is harder than it appears. you must compare tents of the same class and age. The most geometrically perfect shape is the arch with even weight distribution in building. one of the next best shapes is the triangle and that is why tent poles cross to create that shape. in my experience with some of the higher end tents the tunnel or hoop shaped tents are weaker and seep not to stand up to high winds nor snow as well as the dome or modified dome.

DOME!!! i cant stress that enough...! a tunnel has weak points , while a dome equalizes the pressure on every part of it! thats why some bridges have arks and such

Tunnel is stronger and lighter when pitched right but only when pitched right. A dome can be almost as strong and is easy to pitch.
