Results of a nationally representative study show that genital herpes infection is common in the United States. Nationwide, at least 45 million people ages 12 and older, or one out of five adolescents and adults, have had genital HSV infection. Between the late 1970s and the early 1990s, the number of Americans with genital herpes infection increased 30 percent.

It's estimated about 1 in 4 women have genital herpes (25%), while 1 in 5 men have the virus (20%).

1/4 women and 1/5 men over the age of 12 have type 2 genital herpes. While currently 30% of new genital herpes cases are type 1, it is not included in this stat. It is believed that between 25-40% now have genital herpes if you combine both types, but until they start tracking type 1 we will not know for sure. The stats change slightly each year.

One in four women, one in five men, two thirds of people in the sex industry. The numbers go up with age and those are average stats, so for example by the time you're in your forties it is more like 30-40% with genital herpes. But remember all of the 60-80% of people with oral herpes can give you genital herpes from oral sex too.
