I'm having an outdoor BBQ at my place. I've asked my guests to bring a side dish to help deter the cost. I'm providing the burgers and hot dogs.....I'm also providing the drinks. I've had these types of parties before, but one person (who wasn't even invited - but has invited herself) says it's uncouth.....what's your opinion?

She's just being pissy because she wasn't invited to join in on the fun!!

Seriously, down south we have these kind of get-togethers all the time......Mostly on Sundays with the smoker in the driveway, the tv on NASCAR & plenty of ice cold beer in the fridge!! We start smoking the meat about 8am & by 4pm or so the meat is ready & the race is hot!!

I think its a great idea to have people to bring things. Especially if its going to be a big party. Unless you have a friend that you specifically know has money problems, everything sounds fine. This way people will have atleast one side dish they like and can eat with their burgers. Side dishes arent even that expensive to make. Potato salad and macaroni salad are like 10 bucks for all the ingredients.. something you might want to do .. so that everyone doesnt bring the same side dish is find out who is bringing what.. like have someone bring a small cake, cookies, chips, potatoe salad, or whatever they want.. and make a note of it so that you dont have 3 people bring the same chips.. trust me it will make it a better party.. most people like to cook and show off their cooking skills and the person that wasnt invited is probably just being a jerk because they either feel left out or they are just that way.. dont worry about her just tell her that you decided to reshedule or something lol.... im sure that there was a good reason that you didnt invite them.. sounds like they would be a downer on the party anyways. Have fun!! and make sure to brag to the friend about how everyone brought great side dishes lol

If you didn't invite this chick why do you care. If it's so uncouth she wouldn't have invited herself. Have a good time at your party and don't spend any more time worrying about what she thinks. BBQ's are fun and an American tradition.

I've been to parties with friends & office parties where guests brought desserts or side dishes while the host(ess)/boss took care of the main course. I didn't have a problem with bringing something. And a BBQ, in my mind, is an informal event, so I don't see this as a breach of ettiquette.

It isn't uncouth, it's summer! People have been doing this for years. The critic is uncouth a)to have questioned your etiquette and b)to have invited herself.

Perhaps your critic can send you an engraved invitation to the next event she hosts.....or is she just not as hospitable as you?

Have fun.

Absolutly not - potluck BBQ's are a great way to get together and have some fun. It takes some of the pressure off of the hostess/host and lets them enjoy the party as well. Plus, everyone gets to sample other peoples way of preparing a dish.

As for the uninvited person, she is the one that is being "uncouth", or pick one of these to fit her attitude:

Lacking in delicacy or refinement: barbarian, barbaric, boorish, churlish, coarse, crass, crude, gross, ill-bred, indelicate, philistine, rough, rude, tasteless, uncivilized, uncultivated, uncultured, unpolished, unrefined, vulgar.

I prefer ill-bred (for inviting herself) and churlish (for her bad attitude).

what's uncouth is her attending without you willing..misery loves company, so she stated that to bring you down as "punishment"..it's your house, it's fair to bring side dishes because it offers a variety rather than simple things that one may not be able to eat..:) "Miss. Uncouth" is just a lonely soul, trying to get a freebie so she wouldn't have to cook herself...simply put..haha...freeloader

I would ask the girl if she knows so much about proper etiquette then why does she not exercise a little tact when speaking to the host as well as know enough to wait for an invitation before attending an event. And whoeever did invite her, I'd ask them to leave her at home, her unhospitable attitude is not welcome.

I'd chuckle at that one also if someone told me to bring food and the one having the BBQ was only serving hot dogs and hamburgs. Can't yah get some chicken at least?

That is funny .
