should I let people know on the invites that it is going to be a cash bar or would they already assume this? It is a party later on in the evening. I am putting on the invites party at 7:30, b/f arrival at 8. I think I am going to do some appetizers, which of course would be of no cost to guests, but I certainly can't afford buying drinks for everyone.

Let them know - so there are no surprises.
Providing some food and cake to your guests though, is a necessity.

Make sure the invites indicate a cash bar. Munchies are nearly mandatory, if you can afford it, include a ticket in the invite or give them out at the party for one beer-to toast the birthday boy. Work that out with the bar manager. Cheers!

Just put what appetizers you are going to have served on the invitation and put "cash bar" on the invitation also so everyone knows they will be paying for their own alcohol.

It is proper to note this on the invitation. It is also nice to let them know to what degree food will be served. Not the actual menu.but they should know if they should plan for or eat dinner before (Or after).

Make sure you try to negotiate a lower price for cocktails and a really low price for waterr and sodas (That way you will not have to worry about designated drivers so much .75 cents sounds like a good price or if possible, make soda/wate/tea free). Also make sure that someone watches the party-goers and if one of the guests seems Tobe too inebriated, arrange a cab for the or drive them yourself. If this occurs, it would be polite to contact that person the next day to offer them a ride to pick up their car.

Tell your BF Happy Birthday!

Yes, you should let them know. In the invitation just write, "cash bar". Then no one should be embarrassed by thinking that the drinks were free. Any time you "assume"
something, you run the chance that you might make an"a** "out of "u" and "me".
