I've noticed the same thing. Usually when I have a regular cold my mucus is clear, but when I have a chest cold my mucus is yellow and I have it for a longer time. I would say that a cold with yellow mucus is more severe than a cold with clear mucus.

When the mucus changes from clear to a yellow or green color, it means a bacterial infection. The mucus builds up and the nasal passages become blocked because the sinus tissues are swollen. One consequence is the pressure and pain of sinus headaches. Other symptoms of sinusitis include: stuffy nose; sticky-yellow or purulent nasal discharge; nasal congestion; nosebleed; diminished sense of smell; headache; a feeling of heaviness in the head; fever; sore throat; and facial pressure around the cheeks, eyes, and forehead.

Generally mucus is clear and thin, serving to filter air during inhalation. During times of infection, mucus can change color to yellow or green either as a result of trapped bacteria, or due to the body's reaction to viral infection.

If it is clear mucus that means that you have a viral infection and nothing can be done for it, other than treating it symptomatically.
If it is yellow or green that means it is a bacterial infection and you can treat it with antibiotics.

What you've described sounds like Allergies.... Allergies make yr nose continually 'run..' Until you've been Allergy tested you won't know what yr allergic to... BUT You can guess...by what makes it worse... 'Springtime Allergies' is seasonal....yr nose is allergic to all the activity in the garden - plants/seeds/ pollen.... Get an over the counter medication ( Sinus) + it helps until yr Allergies settle.
