at sea with no port nearby? What kind of care can one expect? Will the patient most likely die? Has anyone personally had or know of someone who's had this experience?

Try to rest assured that all cruise ships are equipped for such emergency's. Try not to worry. The medical staff on board are equipped to handle such situations and as one of your answerer's said, if things are critical, they will call for a helicopter to have them taken to the nearest hospital.

I have heard of this happening on board before and that's when I learned how well-equipped cruise ships are for all kinds of illnesses.

P.S. Whether your mom has health insurance, means absolutely nothing to the cruise personnel. She would be treated no matter what the health need. Trust me on this one....

To start, you should not be anywhere without nitroglycerin spray. Ask the Cruise line what kind of infirmary care they can offer, do they have prescription medications. Since there are a lot of older folks who do cruises, this requirement should not be a problem.

5 days out can be almost 2000 miles, so no helicopter will make it unless its Navy and they are in the area.

Best thing, is be on a very healthy diet before you go, and stick to it while at sea. No fattening, fatty, or oily foods. Lots of fresh fruit. If they MUST eat the unhealthy foods, if they'll eat some fruit before and after, they may completely neutralize the bad effects.

Ships can cruise at about 20 mph 24 hours a day. That's 480 miles for 5 days, and max of 1900 miles.

I would expect there to be a nurse on duty that travels with the ship and there should be an emergency room set up in case of injury or illness, I would call the Cruiseline and look into it definately.

Liverpie has quite a sense of humor.
Check directly with the cruise ship directors for this info if concerned.

They put you in a body bag with a heavy object and slide you over board. That is why the ship carries body bags . Have you ever heard of burial at sea ? It is cheap and easy !

You would be in a very dangerous situation, no Medical care available and your insurance (Medicare for example) would not cover the situation.
