Yes, there are genetic links with heart attacks, strokes and cancers ... they run in families. However, even though someone is predisposed to certain a disease, they can effect a change by changing their diet and environment. Easier said than done. Old habits (LOL) die hard. What we learn from our family and parents are like imprints .. good and bad imprints. They are difficult to alter.

Yes, but your diet and lifestyle may play an even bigger part than genetics.

I am in the same situation, with father and grandfather having them at 57. One smoked 5 packs a day, the other ate cheese and crackers almost daily, and had a lot of stress from wife, 2nd wife, and re-marriage to first wife.

Do the right things with diet and lifestyle, and you'll likely skip it.

I have 4 siblings, no one but me has a heart problem. I had almost totally blocked arteries and triple bypass 18 months ago, and I am the youngest. Marital stress, teenagers when I am older, and too much ice cream, cheese and crackers for thirty years were bad for me. My slimness and athleticism helped avoid a heart attack, but just barely.

It depends on whether or not it was a defect that caused it (which "could" be hereditary) or whether it was lifestyle (i.e. bad food, no exercise.

Either way, you can do everything to take care of your heart which is primarily healthy diet, low stress lifestyle, and exercise.

The worse thing you can do to your body is tell your self that because you father had a heart attack that you will. Your body will listen to what you tell it (and no I am not talking about brainwashing). It is how our bodies respond.

that depends. u can avoid it, by keeping a very very healthy and balanced diet.
also, u can check it ur ancestors all have heart attacks. this could help u in researching if u may get the problem.
in addition, if u find ur self having symtoms of a heart attack, approach ur doctor immediately.
i've heard that coughing helps ease the chest during an heart attack. perhaps this may help too
i hope u find ur solution real soon! best lucks!! =]

There's a lot to say about this. To put it simply, what kind of heart attack did he have, what brought it on? all these and more questions.
Tell your dads cardiologist your worries. He'll explain your situation better then anyone here could.

yes it is possible if you live a sedentary lifestyle and eat unhealthy stuff. heart problems may not be hereditary but you can develop problems if you don't eat right.
