Yes; however, I would advise that it be more of a get together versus you throwing a "party". This way the invitation can state something more like an end of summer get together and please bring your own meat and drink of choice. Emphasize that their will be hot dogs and hamburgers and soda/juice for kids along with all the fun fixins and sides for everyone being provided! Make it more of a fun gathering for everyone to wind down from summer before going back to school, etc... so it is more casual than formal or do a theme like back to school time or tailgating party at your grill type of thing since most people bring their own everything with a tailgating party. Since it is going to be a large group, I would focus on the fun gathering and note where parking should be, etc... on the invite. Most of your friends will understand that it is expensive to host a large cookout and wouldn't expect you to pay for everything... set the mood and don't stress over the meat but stress kids are invited and will have water, soda, juice as well as their meals and all sides. Sounds like fun! Also if you have a few other friends that would be interested in helping that are in your circle of friends, you can add them to your invites so it is more of a group gathering and it takes more pressure off you! The more the merrier! Have a fun time no matter what and enjoy the company since that is what it is all about! :)

Thats a good idea. Every time I host a get together everyone knows to bring some soda. All my guest know bring at least a couple 3 or 2 liter sodas. Theres nothing wrong with that.
Taco-Stuffed Pasta Shells Serves 6
Ingredients
30 Jumbo pasta shells
1 lb ground beef
1 can Refried beans
1 cup Shredded cheddar cheese
Taco seasoning
Sour cream
Salsa
Preparation
Brown the ground beef in a large non-stick skillet. While beef is cooking, bring a large pot of water to a boil. When beef is cooked, drain the excess grease add taco seasoning and 1/3 cup water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 10 minutes. When water comes to a boil, prepare pasta shells according to package directions. When the taco mixture is ready, add the refried beans and half of the cheddar cheese. (Preheat oven to 350 degrees if you'll be making the dish right away) Coat the bottom of two 9x11 baking dishes with a thin layer of salsa. When the shells are ready, drain and put half in each baking dish. Stuff with the taco mixture. Top with the remaining shredded cheese and cover with aluminum foil. Either put in oven for 20-25 minutes, or store in refrigerator for later preparation. Cook refrigerated meal 55-60 minutes. Serve with sour cream and extra salsa. Additional side dish suggestions: spanish rice, chips & salsa, mexi-corn

Although I expect the people you are inviting are close friends and family, sending invitations that practically say "Come to dinner, and, oh yeah, you bring the food" is just a tad crass. If you can't afford to entertain, then don't invite them. And if cost is an issue, why are you talking about steaks and ribs? Why don't you just buy hot dogs for everyone, and forget the high cost items? No body is expecting a gourmet spread. They are expecting some laughs and relaxation with a group of people they like, and maybe a bite to eat. I would buy hot dogs and buns, ketchup, mustard, and chips, and let the good times roll.

If it was me, I'd perhaps look in to a caterer, and ask everyone to chip in ahead of time to help defer the costs. If everyone has to bring there own meat, there's probably going to be chaos at the party with everyone food possibly getting mixed up, everyone wanting to cook there food there way, people arriving at different times, etc.
Having a BBQ caterer will let everyone relax and enjoy the party, while the caterer takes care of all the headaches of cooking.

Yes I think its fine.
I belonged to a social group where parties were always take a drink and a plate of food, and bbqs were always drink and food to BBq.
Otherwise costs to host are prohibitive.

If you already are going to supply the burger & dogs...I would just say if you want to have something else....feel free to bring what you would like to have.
If you are worried about not having enough food, what not say...something we are having a party/BBQ please bring your favortie dish to share . (Or something to that effect). It never hurts to ask for help, and most people are happy to bring something! After all, it isn't at their house ...so they really don't have to worry about everything else!(Clean up)

Honestly..I think that is tacky to ask people to bring meat. I suggest just doing burgers and dogs for everyone.
