Can anyone please advise on tipping for services out there please? Usual things ..... taxi drivers, service in restaurants and bars, room service etc ........ reason I ask is that I understand it's not the norm to tip anywhere out there but doing so for 'good service' will not offend. This seems to be a complete reverse to New York where tipping is almost compulsory!

It is not the 'norm' to tip for anything in Perth. Tipping is not part of Australian culture so bar/restaurant staff, taxi drivers or room attendants will not be expecting it as they would in the USA. You should still receive 'good service'. Of course if you do feel like giving a tip, then I think that the average is probably 10 to 15% on top of the bill and I am sure that tips wouldn't be refused!!

Enjoy your trip to Perth!

Hope you enjoy your stay in Perth. If you want some information about things to do while your there then have a look at the question I asked recently as I am also going to Perth for 4 weeks in a few days.

I think the tipping situation in Australia is similar to the UK, where tips aren't compulsory, but for good service I would give a bit extra. Its all down your own discretion as to whether the service provided was worthy of a tip.

My question about places can be found here if your interested http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvAMjup5uNNiOnedFrCRrnYgBgx.?qid=20070724090706AA2WeE8

The worse thing you can do in Australia as a tourist is tip someone in the service industry, this is not America or anywhere in Europe. We get paid properly here by employers and have a great life, supported by an incredible welfare program called Centrelink. If you tip, you just encourage this country to fall into bad habits like the States where even in a Subway sandwich store they have tip jars on the counter. We are appreciative of any generosity, but this is not L.A. , New York or Hawaii where the wages are low and everyone has six jobs to survive.

My Birth State is WA, I am currently living in Perth. Trust me you do not have to tip at all. If you feel like being kind hearted and giving someone a tip for outstanding service, it will not be refused. But just remember workers are generally well paid here and they do not rely on tips to substitute there income unlike America. So have fun......and use those tips for shopping.

When in Perth, I tip the restaurant staff a few dollars, say 5%-ish, but it's not essential. Bar staff - nothing. Room service - nothing. Someone carries your bags - nothing. Taxi drivers - I often round up or give them a dollar or two extra.

When i went to Oz, service charges seem to be included in most restaurants, so there is no need for tipping. I think there are far more things to think about than tipping!

Also you dont tip taxis unless they carry your bags.

We don't tip here but a nice smile and a show of appreciation for the staff will go down well.
Enjoy your trip and try to get out of Perth maybe go down south for a visit ,one of the nicest places to go is up to Monkey Mia and Ningallo Reef but you might not have time its a long drive.
If not Rottenest Island is well worth a visit.

Most Brits that I know living over in Australia install the Pommy TV app on their computers to watch the UK TV channels online when they are there as the local TV isn't too great. You can get the British BBC iPlayer & ITV Players working when you install it on a computer or tablet.

It is normally rated at 10 to 15% of the overall bill, I do not belieev you give tips to taxi drivers but in resturants and things, you do. The way to look at it is this way, if your bill is forty pound, the tip should be at least four pound, though be careful, as sometimes the waiters and porters etc have already taken that tip for you (how thoughtful of them)

If it not that sort of a bill thing, then give at least five dollars or maybe a little more to a porter that carries your luggage or whether you think it is necessary.

You do not need to tip in Western Australia or anywhere in Australia for that matter. It is not expected but is always appreciated for good service.
