Key skills are:
Communicating clearly and effectively, with diplomacy and tact, but also being able to stand up for your own wants/needs.
Cleaning up after yourself...and not becoming the housemaid to everyone else!
Time management - make time for your academic work, your social life, your bonding time with your hostel-mates, and still maintain a connection to your friends and family who are elsewhere...and most importantly, take time to take care of yourself and have some "alone" time to enjoy!

Moving out is scary but it is a learning experience. You will learn how to give and take, share time and space with strangers, learn that home wasn't so bad, make new friends, learn you are more self suffiecient than you or your parents thought. You and your new room mates will argue about dishes ,chores and messes and you will stay up at night trying to get in last inute studying. You will laugh and cry and love it all.If your lucky you'll make a lifelong friend. You will learn about time management( gettting projects done, study and housework chores. You will learn the value of a budget and how quickly money can be spent. When my daughters went away to college/university I was amazed how much they could do without me.I was both proud and a little bit sad.My babies were all grown up.When did that happen?Take care

sharing a kitchen is hard to do with people you do not know, especially if someone is cooking when you want to make your self some food.I have had to live with house mates and if some one was cooking and I was starving I had to have healthy and tasty snacks in an easy access able shelf.Try to get a cubbourd or shelf that you can get to with out getting in the way all the time.I had have lots of apples I had pre washed once I brought them home, but you can wash them in any sink.Same with other fruits. When you have the kitchen time make sure you pre wash some vegys like carrots you will need to peel them and put in a sealed bag.make double the salad so you can have some ready for the next day, same with sandwiches, and burritos. If you bake something like cookie or cake its polite to shre make sure its not under done you dont want any one mad at you.theres lots of easy baking items in stores.See if anyone is interested in dinner night when someone cooks for all on a certain night chosen. As of the bath room Good luck its so hard one day you might have to use the kitchen sink to brush your teeth somedays if bathrrom is taken up. You might need a big stand up mirror to dress and put on makeup.Hope fuly everyone cleans up after them selves, like you will need to do ,just in case get disinfectant wipes with no bleach like lysol or something.especially if you dont want to sit on the same toilet see where you can buy toilet seat covers for yourself, they will have to buy their own.Dont leave your tooth brush lying around or in a cup get a travel holder someone might get drunk and barrow it by accident, razors too keep them to your self, but dont accuse anyone of anything unless you see it.Also kep alot of water bottles around.Hopefully you can keep to your self and be social too.Good luck with roomys!!

A copy of a good basic cook book will be your best friend. Practice every disk twice before you move.
Budget your money, don't spend a single penny you can avoid. Start practicing being cheap now.
And when you get there, make a schedule for who cleans what when.

How to cook and get along with others. Be able to do your own laundry and clean up after yourself. Know that it is better to communicate with them if something is wrong, instead of letting it keep building up and then you blow up. treat the house as if it were your home. Have fun and Good Luck!!

cooking and cleaning! and by cooking i mean being able to make simple healthy foods. lots of people get fat when they move out cause they can't prepare simple healthy foods. Tuna is a staple! chicken breast and canned soups as well, Spaghettios are reall good for you believe it or not! they can prevent colon cancer! get a George forman grill, it will save your life. Be clean and you should save alot of problems with roomies.

I would just have to say that cleaning is a big priority. There's nothing worse than a sink full of dirty dishes!
