his/her personality, becomes withdrawn, doesn't talk more than a few words a day. because he/she becomes so involved in a cause that it seems to overshadow him/her?

Believe it or not, it helps them to know that you're aware of their struggle. You may not be able to help, but help that person to know that you're aware and that you care. It's better to at least have a shoulder to lean on than to have nothing at all. Ask that person what the problem is. If there is a cause that person will surface eventually. Gently coax him/her every day to speak.

There could be a chemical imbalance, or more severe medical conditions involved. Depression can be a symptom of a lot of other conditions, including addiction.
The best thing to do is to let them know why YOU think they have changed, and that they may want to see a Doctor about it.

See if you can get him to go in for a physical and give the doctor a heads up as far as his depression etc. Good luck
