Mountain Dew actually surfaced in Virginia in the early ‘40s as a lithiated-lemon mixer used with hard liquor in bars; similar to 7-Up. The concoction was originally created by two brothers, Ally and Barney Hartman, who jokingly named the drink “Mountain Dew” after “Tennessee Mountain Moonshine”, a popular product in the hills of Virginia at the time- the mixer was at one time even billed as “zero proof hillbilly moonshine”. The moonshine theme didn’t stick, but the hillbilly did, and when Mountain Dew was trademarked and labeled, it included a cartoon hillbilly taken from the creators’ original label design, who would eventually grow to become the drink’s official mascot for years to come. Later named ‘Gran’Pappy’, he soon became a popular icon in bars, and appeared on several Mountain Dew products and merchandise, lasting for several more decades.

Mountain Dew (currently stylized as Mtn Dew) is a carbonated soft drink brand produced and owned by PepsiCo. The original formula was invented in the 1940s by Tennessee beverage bottlers Barney and Ally Hartman and was first marketed in Marion, VA, Knoxville and Johnson City, Tennessee. A revised formula was created by Bill Bridgforth in 1958. Both "Kickapoo Joy Juice" and "Mountain Dew" are nicknames for moonshine liquor. The "Kickapoo Joy Juice" nickname was invented by Al Capp, as the ultimate moonshine, made by Hairless Joe. The Mountain Dew nickname predates prohibition, and may go back to the Whiskey Rebellion.

There are a couple of songs called "Mountain Dew" that reference the liquor, not the soft drink. Grandpa Jones, of Grand Ole Opry fame, recorded the second one, which was considered an old traditional mountain tune in the 1930s. A couple of artists have recorded the first one.
