This person is blaming all 1.3 billion Chinese for his own bad luck
Most Chinese are nice. Sometimes many of them seem rude to us, but that's only by our cultural yardstick...usually no offense is meant.
Sure, there are plenty of idiots here. Maybe a low percentage, but with this many people it's still a large number. However, these are no reason to boycott an entire country that also has some wonderful things to offer if you give it a chance.
By the way, Hangzhou is a great town. Lots and lots of foreigners live and visit there and have a great experience.
Oh, and don't work for EF...or AES or most of the other chain English mills here. Avoiding these places is one way to reduce the chance of problems...

I need to admit, china is the most rascist people you could ever come across. I am black, have bushy hair which is usually in braids. Now you can imagine the stares I have when I walk the streets of Shanghai, Hangzhou or where ever. Some are extremely nice and open up conversations. Some others say chinese which they think I dont understand. What I fail to understand is why the locals with no travelling experience think they better off than me.

I teach here and found that there are two ways to deal with things in life.
Let it slide
Or fight it.
You're apparently a fighter and I suspect pretty sensitive. Learn to roll with the punches, that includes your wife, and realize that there is a lot more going on then you seem to understand.
Plus you have a bad attitude about China and things that are different in general.
China is not worse then the USA or better. We are both different.
I'd also say you have a fix it attitude and the Chinese are a very proud people and resent being told what to do.
The biggest ally you have is your life experience outside of China, your biggest enemy is you are comparing all of that to them. The Chinese people are very curious about the west.
Quite frankly, I don't give a damned what people think of me. If they don't like me, that is their problem, not mine. Just treat people the way you would want to be treated and you should get along fine. Screw the rest. It's not worth your time. Life is too short to worry about the things you can't change.
Peace
Jim

I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience so far in China. I have lived and worked in China for many years, and I'm married to a Chinese woman. I think it's important to realize that, even though China is in the process of opening up to the outside world, it will take time for most locals to adapt to dealing with people from other cultures. It's true that some people here will talk behind your back, and that many places aren't exactly the cleanest or most fragrant places on earth. However, lack of manners and poor sanitation is largely a matter of education. Many of my Chinese friends are quite concerned about these problems, and often lament about their compatriots' lack of manners or civic responsibility. The fact that many people here are upset about it is a sign that an increasing number of Chinese people are aware of the situation and would like to do something about it. It might take some time before you see significant improvement. As for your perspective on the Chinese education system, please keep in mind that there are billions of people here who are trying create a better life for themselves, while access to schooling is obviously limited. As with the problem concerning manners and sanitation standards, there are also many Chinese who realize that there's a need for an overhaul of the local education and examination system. Even though things can seem exasperating at times for expats who are used to vastly different standards of living, it's best to be patient and understanding despite going through unpleasant experiences.

hahaha your experience is definitely not credible... maybe u r just paranoid because u r a foreigner in a new country that has traditions different than your own... China is not what u make it seem to be... Chinese r respectable and they love Americans as I know for a fact lmao... also many Chinese people still want to go to the US for its "opportunities, benefits, chances, etc..." there would be no reason for us to hate on u because we come from completely different lifestyles and everything... also Chinese students r of the world's greatest so education is not lost... it is true however that the farmlands should be cleaned up and people in those areas like the Fujian province should be helped financially and also in terms of education, etc...

Dude, it's not that bad! Consider Saudi Arabia...
It's your fault for signing up with English First. Everybody knows those guys are clowns, and are not to be trusted. There are plenty of good teaching jobs in China, it just takes a bit of research and patience.
Maybe if your wife learned a little bit of Chinese it would help.
Bloody cultural insensitive prick....

When we are frustrated, we need to vent our feelings, but it's not wise to do it through complaining,
Basically, I'm afraid you are prejudiced. Most of what you said is overstated.
Teachers are highly respected in Chinese tradition, and Chinese have different ways to express their kindness, some of them even seem to be over warm-hearted. But don't take their good intention as "trying to steal you away."
Yet I partly agree with you, there are SOME people, not most, in China like to talk bad behind others. Is this rare in your nation?

Your answer is amusing!
"deformed womens' feet for "esthetic" reasons"
LOL.... LOL....!!!!
Where about in China that any girl's feet have got deformed in the past 90 years?
Adult's feet couldn't get deformed!!! It had to be done when the girl turned to be about 6 or 7, not even my grand grand grand mother got this bad luck and she passed away in the mid of 1960s.

Overall, I think China is growing, the more teaching you do, the better China will grow.
Pay attention to good things and don't complain.
You arrived in China to teach the citizens about manners, and then you shouldn't be complaining.
Good Luck in CHINA!
