Im corresponding with someone who believes that ants don't have a soul. But, humans do.
What does it take to have a soul ?

That's fine and dandy, But, where's at least the empirical evidence for or against the existance of souls ?

Living animals ARE 'souls'
(Genesis 1:20) And God went on to say: “Let the waters swarm forth a swarm of living souls and let flying creatures fly over the earth upon the face of the expanse of the heavens.”
(Revelation 16:3) And the second one poured out his bowl into the sea. And it became blood as of a dead man, and every living soul died, [yes,] the things in the sea.
Animals souls are living and can die.
So animals ARE souls and do not have anything that flits off at death.
And what happens when animals die?
(Ecclesiastes 3:19-20) For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit, so that there is no superiority of the man over the beast, for everything is vanity. 20 All are going to one place. They have all come to be from the dust, and they are all returning to the dust.

An ant is not an animal, it's a bug.
The Creator gives souls to all bodies of Life.

When God made the earth, He made man in His own image and breathed into man the breath of life. What other creature can boast that? But I believe you've already labled the Bible as a unreliable source, so that might not work for you.
