I've asked a Mormon about this and they deny that they are racist, it's just that they believe that god says they are meant to be slaves. It's nothing personal...apparently. Until the sixties, the LDS was classified as a racist organization alongside the KKK and Neo-Nazis.

Mormons do NOT hate black people. The restrictions put upon the black race in the past were meant to be a LOVINNG, PROTECTIVE barrier to allow them the ability to progress to a more equal state given the punitive restrictive way blacks were forced to live under slavery. Of course as in most thinge involving people of many backgrounds, Some cannot get their own prejudices out of their way to see the light of truth, and they abused these truths. President Kimball REMOVED these restrictions when he had the revelation to do so. There are multitudes of black individuals who serve faithfully in all levels of the priesthood. There are no restrictions on marriage or temple attendence either.

Yeah, ol' Brigham at the helm was both good, and not so hot. He managed to get the saints out of a tight spot in Nauvoo, but then sort of let it all go to his head - like Joseph. The main difference is that you'd get to like Joseph after a few minutes listening to him (but won't know exactly why), but Brigham alienated nearly everyone right and left right off the bat.
Possibly a character flaw amplified by the fact that god didn't actually like him either, and rarely spoke. This resulted in the 'Adam-God' doctrine that was quashed as soon as Brigham 'left office.'
As for changing the ban on blacks and the priesthood, that just took a bit longer and more lawsuits. The church is still just almost law-abiding, except for the financial disclosure stuff.

First, he said nothing about marriage. Back then, it was illegal for whites to marry blacks.
Second, he said under the law of GOD. We don't live under the law of GOD right now, we live under te law of man.
Third, what he actually said was, if the white MAN of the chosen seed (holds the priesthood) mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty under the law of GOD is death on the spot.
Death for theh white man. It is well known now that many white men used black women to slake their sexual thirst.
Besides, like I said, we don't live under te law of God.

Like Liesel said, use something other than the Journal of Discourses. They are not scripture. Otherwise, that was covered by the others very nicely!

LDS/Mormons don't believe the Journal of Discourses to be valid scripture anymore. You should try something they do use as scripture next time.

Whatever. There are plenty of married blacks, and people married to blacks. Show the whole passage.
