Your true etiquette experts will say that it's absolutely NOT okay, but I don't have a problem with it. Of course, it all depends on your idea of "softly". When I pass a person at the market humming softly, it usually makes me smile. If someone is all out singing, though, it can be pretty distracting (especially if they have a horrible voice).
There is NOTHING worse than people having loud cell phone conversations in the market, though. I'd take a bad singer over that any day!

I sing whereever and whenever, and have occasionally been caught yodeling for my kids! It helps when they are babies to entertain them in the checkout!

i dont know about etiquette, but i really like it when i'm in this random place and i notice someone softly singing... it kind of reminds me that we're all human and somewhere deep inside of us, there's peace.

If you can actually sing or if its funny enough then its okay, if its not funny or you cant sing for $#!T then no its not okay.

I think so and if you have a good voice (I don't) just belt it out and allow everyone to enjoy it.
