I have been through this myself with a dog as old as 7 months. A pup that small feels very alone without her "pack", aka-you. Everything that I read on the subject myself said things like "Don't give in to the dogs cries, it will learn that crying does not get you to let it out; put something that smells like you in the crate, a tshirt, etc; Play the radio, leave a tv on". With the 2 month old pup that I had, nothing worked and since we lived in an apartment where people would eventually hear her and get mad, we gave her up. Now, with the older puppy, she would bark for like 5 to 10 minutes and then go to sleep the entire night or whatever. Here is a lifesaver though while you are trying to use tough love and not go to her rescue: EARPLUGS!!! I bought a few pairs and boy did they save me. That and a fan turned on, I could not hear a thing! Best of of luck to you, I know it's hard to deal with.

You need to get some training on dog obedience. She's whining because she's lonely when you are away. Try putting some toys in there or an old-fashioned alarm clock that makes a ticking sound - it will remind her of her mother's heartbeat and comfort her.

Put her in the crate even when you're home and can be visible. When you go on errands and when you're in the shower your dog can't see you - it's seperation anxiety.

Put the crate in a main room, and when you're home, crate the dog. It will pitch a fit, but it will see you. Sitting on the couch, walking from room to room, out to get the mail, into the garage to do some laundry. KEEP THE DOG IN THE CRATE. You're conditioning the dog that crate doesn't mean gone - crate means... crate.

My dog would flip out, scream, drool all over herself, bite the crate, you name it - we called it crage or crate rage. I was at my wits end. I contacted http://www.leerburg.com and Ed Frawley told me that until she learned to stop acting stupid in the crate, that the crate was to be her world. In the house means in the crate. My only interaction with her had to be on a lead and OUTSIDE exclusively. In the house, in the crate... until she learned to shut up.

It took 2 weeks. Now she crates on command, crates voluntarily and doesn't make a peep when I leave.

Good luck.
