There is nothing wrong with dying your own hair. If your really serious about dying your hair please have someone to help you that knows what to do. Just incase...I really don't blame you for not going to a hair stylist that charges a lot thats why my prices are somthing to reason with.

Here are some tips to help you with your at home hair dying kit......

Deep condition a few days before you color. Healthy hair will absorb the dye far better, and lead to a longer lasting tone. This is especially vital if you are choosing a red shade, the worst culprit of all when it comes to fading.

- Wait two days after shampooing before coloring your hair. Shampoo strips your hair of its natural oils, and it is these oils that can keep your hair from becoming damaged. Not only will the color adhere better, the process will be much more comfortable for you. (Shampooing makes your scalp more sensitive, thus waiting a few days minimizes that feeling.)

- There are many lotions and wipes on the market for removing excess dye from your hands, earlobes, and hairlines. However, the best trick is an even easier one. Mix 1 teaspoon cigarette ash with a dollop on conditioner, rub on affected area, and wipe away.

- Always apply color on dry hair. If you try to dye your hair while it is wet, the water absorbed by your tresses will dilute the dye, making the process far less effective.

- If you are coloring your hair for the first time, start at the crown or nape of the neck where color is the darkest. That way the dye stays a bit longer there than on the rest of the hair, and your tone will look a lot more even.

- If your natural hair color is dark brown and you are trying to go platinum blonde, that is not the time to be trying an at home hair color.

- If you are not sure about your hair color change, try a temporary dye first. These dyes wash out within a couple days and can be a perfect way to "try on" a hair color before moving to a more permanent type.

But as for the hair dyes...try Profective, African Pride, feria By Loreal (i think).

I went to my cousin's house recently. She's 14. She had her hair dyed at a nice salon with a very expensive dye. But what did I find when I was playing with her hair? Gray hair scattered all over.
The bottom line? No matter how good the quality, dying your hair is very bad for you. Especially if you're under the age of 20. It just messes up your hair.
Even if you just get a Revlon or Herbal Essences brand from the drugstore, it really does mess up your hair. The least concern should be a messed up color.
Just leave your hair natural. Wait till you're about 35, when you get gray hair, then start dying your hair every couple of months.

if you are keeping around your natural color you probably wont have any problem. If you are trying to go lighter- especially with dark hair - you will probably not be happy with what a box color can do as they are restricted on the potency of the product- they leave that to the professionals. If you are wanting to do a semi permanent or permanent I like Natural instincts for 'semi' becuase it does fade and no roots (again staying around your natural color) if you want permanent be careful and try to be a good judge of how much hair you have, when I did box color I had to use 3 boxes because my hair is long and thick. Nothings worse than running to the store with half your hair colored ;)

personal advice...don't mess with your hair color at all...especially not with home box dyes. they fade...no matter what they say. my hair is dark brown and i dyed it many colors...i attempted to dye it back to normal so i went with a couple shades darker than my natural color thinking it would fade down a little...by time my roots had grown out about 3 inches, the dye was a reddish-brown...so again, i dyed it thinking it only turned that color becuase of the color i had underneath. i would up dying it at least 20 times, and by then what i had originally done to it would have been grown out anyways. that's just my personal experience...but if you are looking to box dye at home, get a color protecting shampoo and a hair dye with no ammonia.

I wanted to highlight my hair with blonde streaks (my hair is like inbetween dirty blonde & very light brown) so I bought a home kit & had my friend do it. It didn't damage my hair the only thing was that my hair was lighter than the box pictures & it made my hair look really bleached, especially the first week it now looks like I wanted it too.

Do not use color from store...let me tell you y..because for every color you need a different volume of peroxide and sometimes depending on your hair u need a certaine volume of peroxide. When u buy it from the store ..they just put the vol of peroxide that most people would used but thats when you damage your hair, because maybe you are using a volume of peroxide that isnt ment for your hair and completly damages it. peroxide is a chamical which is very bad for your hair so0o if you are goin to do your hair ..go to the salon..they know exactly how mch peroxide to put in your hair and know exactly how long the color should sit in your hair for .
