Karen Armstrong's biography of the Buddha is good.
Stephen Batchelor's "Buddhism without Belief" is also good.
Anything by Thich Nhat Hahn would be beneficial.
Jon Kabat-Zinn's book "Full Catastrophe Living"
I would recommend that you look in your local phone book for a Buddhist meditation center and get to know some of the practitioners.

Try the books by Lobsang Rampa.
My mum and dad reads the books on him.
I'm an atheist but I do consider helping people.
This should help you.
1*Feeding the Flame
2*Beyond the Tenth
3*Chapter of Life
4*The Rampa Story
5*The Third Eye
6*Wisdom of the Ancients
Also try the Tibetan Book of the Dead.
