Selective cutting is the best because they take the trees that are ready to be cut and leave the ones that still can grow. If you cut all the trees in a forest, they will not come back as the same type of trees. For example, if you clear cut a maple forest, the trees will most likely come back as another type of tree. It would take a lot of years to get a real maple forest back, it you ever do.
