Anne, do you mean: "Recoil?" Muzzle flip and kick are other terms for this as well.
Best.

I believe you are talking about RECOIL. But, not all recoil can rattle you. For instance, the .22LR with the recoil it produces, can be handled by nearly everyone. Then you get into the middle class of cartridges, such as the .270 Win., 30-06 Springfield, and maybe the 7mm Rem. Mag. These cartridges will rattle you if you are not prepared. These three rounds are about as much recoil an average shooter can handle until it makes him flinch. Then you get up to the big boy cartridges that are used to kill huge animals. Some cartridges are the .375 H&H Mag., 416 Weatherby Mag., and the .600 Nitro Express. These are the cartridges that only the most experienced shooters can handle, and even they get rattled from them too. These big boys are used to hunt very large African game, such as cape buffalo, eland, and maybe even elephant.

The word is recoil. "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction" The force pushing the bullet forward also pushes the gun backwards thus the push, or kick, or recoil.

recoil is your answer but kick is another the recoil is caused by the barrel that has a coil system in it to help the bullet fly straighter once the bullet leaves the chamber the pressure is released and u get a recoil or kick

the shock is called recoil. the unprepared jolt is called kick. recoil is something that comes with every gun, but kick is something that comes with shooting larger caliber guns.
