Ok so we all know that BC goes from whatever number it started from down to zero and then we have AD which goes up. BC means before christ so at zero BC Jesus was probably born, right? and then we have 1 AD and so forth. But my question is why the counting backwards. Did the church change around time so that it wold coincide with Jesus' birth? and if they did, how were years measured before the church screwed up the entire process?

You're a Xian, right?
How did I guess?
Guess.

We, well some of us, have been using the Gregorian calendar since the 1500s. I'm sure you think our current calendar is the only one that's ever been used. That's what gave away you're Xian - probably USian too, yeah?

Before, during and since that time many other calendars have been in use. Get that? MANY OTHER Calendars have been, and still are, used.

Our time in The West, seeing as Christendom had a fairly severe influence, is gaged either years before or years after Christ; hence BC and AD or BCE and CE if you want to do Political Correct.

I hope this goes some way in alleviating your obvious lack of knowledge.

Yes, the church created a whole new calendar to reflect the birth of Jesus. The Jewish calendar didn't change, nor did many others.

Because the advent of Christ is the centerfold of humanity, B.C. "Before Christ, a countdown to his birth". A.D. " Anno Domini" in the year of our Lord, After he was born.

the jewish calender says its the year five thousand and something, the BC numbers count backwards because it is counting the years away from zero, like a number line.

I'm afraid you're a bit out of date. The designation is now BCE - Before Common Era, or Before Current Era or Before Christian Era.
Similarly it is no longer AD but CE - Common/Current/Christian Era.

You do realize the calendar was created retroactively, right?

There was no church until decades (centuries?) later.
