Hell is eternal separation from God. It is a dangerous thing to try to point out who is and is not going to hell, mainly because if you look at yourself honestly you will have to admit that you have sinned and that if it wasn't for God's forgiveness you do not really deserve to spend eternity with God. The only thing we can do to avoid hell is to give ourselves to God entirely through Jesus Christ. There is nothing else you can do to save your life. St. Faustina received a vision of hell, and one of the first things she noticed is that most of the people there did not believe in hell while they were alive.

The only way to go to heaven is to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and follow Him the rest of your life. No you do not need to obey what He tells you because we are all human but Christ knows what we need in our life. As for those who go to hell is likely those who do not have Jesus Christ in their heart and walking with Him. Yes, even Christians can be sinners too because we are sinners but we have Christ in our hearts to forgive us for our sins. If you have not made this step in faith to trusth the Lord, Jesus Christ to accept Him as your Lord and Savior I would when your ready.
