I was wondering if I join the Navy and become a corpsman what are my chances of being assigned to a Marine unit. I really what to go greenside and serve with the Marines. I would hate to be stuck in some clinic of on some ship. I want to be on the front lines fighting along side the Marines.

let see, when i went to a-school in great lakes, IL... (which is where the corpsman train too) the corpsman were always seen running and getting ready for war... lol, so, basically, you have a better chance of going to iraq then to end up on a ship.... i would say that depending on your class (highest gpa chooses command) your options are 1)iraq 2)navy hospital 3)ship.... ship is the last one because only a few are needed per ship... so, you have a real damn good chance of ending up in iraq, plus if you volunteer, then u will probably get it. (DON'T LET THE RECRUITER TALK YOU INTO GOING UNDESIGNATED... JOIN ONLY IF YOU CAN GET THE CORPSMAN JOB U WANT) trust me, i know from experience.

Join the Navy. Grad. boot camp. Grad. corpsman school. Request duty with a Marine unit. That's the only way. Or perhaps don't request it, and they will assign it to you anyway. Good Luck. All corpsman stationed with the Marines are Navy Corpsmen.

When you get to Hospital Corps School at Great Lakes, let them know you would like to be assigned to Fleet Marines upon graduation. Then you will be sent to Field Medical Service School at either Camp Lejuene or Camp Pendleton. Upon completion of that course you will have an NEC of 8404 and become part of some Marine ground or air unit.
But you won't be "fighting" alongside the Marines. You are tightly restricted by the Rules of Land Warfare (commonly called the Geneva Conventions). You are armed merely to protect your life or the life of your patient. That 30 man-plus platoon is looking at you as the critical medical resource in that platoon. And they will do their damndest to make sure you survive.

My brother is a corpsman and was with the Marines twice. You have to go to Fleet Marine Force school. that is what he did to get assigned to the Marines.

if you go Reserves.. 100%. currently Male HMs in the Reserves ARE going to FMSS and are being assigned Green side.

Active Duty.. not 100%. you will be assigned to where they need you.. and that does include Greenside base medical centers or field hospitals.
