My kids school sends home a paper for signatures. Friends and family pay a dollar per line and then sign their name. We also have a "spring fling". Each class does a project "basket" that is auctioned off. They have done everything from scrapbooking baskets to a grill and all the accessories. During the Spring Fling they sell tickets for the kids to ride rides, sell popcorn and drinks, bake sale.... And a few other things I cant remember. They raised quite a bit with it. I am not on the PTO, so I dont have any exact numbers. They also sold "Smenciles". They are scented pencils made from recycled paper. They were a buck each. Those did really good. Great stocking stuffer. Good luck.

Raffles. Most local companies are willing to donate to a school fundraiser (free pizzas/dinners, birthday packages, etc...). You can even get some of the non-product companies (i.e. insurance agents, lawyers..) to underwrite prizes (they donate $100 toward the purchase of a DVD player). Try to get some major prizes (large screen TV, car if you can). Sell tickets for $5 or $10. Do some package deals like $5 each or 6 for $20. It doesn't cost you much to do, so long as you get the prizes donated.
You may have to get a raffle license from your city, but other than that, all you have to do is send raffle tickets home with the kids. They can sell door to door or just to relatives.

I don't know if this would translate well to an elementary school setting...but when I was in high school our number one annual band fundraiser was a dinner auction.
People and businesses in the community would donate auction items (we're talking, opera tickets, landscaping services, one time even a classic car!!) We would hire a catering company to put on a pasta dinner and the jazz band would play music throughout the evening. Parents and community members would buy a dinner ticket at the door and register for the auction and the money would start pouring in!
One year we actually raised over $100,000 for our band and choir programs!!
I would imagine your districts high school jazz band would be more than happy to come down and perform at your schools auction (free of charge of course)

i too am PTO (president) first for the snack issue you really should research some grants & it a class makes it a project you have a better chance of getting one...second, we had an awesome fundraiser last yr (& plan on continuing it this yr) we sent home letter asking people to donate a flat rate to your child for walking ( a walk-a-thon)...we have our children walk a couple laps around playground & when have walked 5 miles (in no specificate amount of time days even) then they get a foot necklace ...the children walk for 3weeks (we do all yr. but fundraise 3wks) then on the last day we have a few simple games & hot dogs & popcorn & chips & snacks then each family walks the last lap together & they earn either more feet for necklace, or certificate, or t-shirt for 20miles. seems like a lot but really it doesn't cost barley anything...i hope you get the gist of it.. we earned only $7,000 this yr but we did it after we already had a fundraiser (too much too soon) next will be better!

Successful fundraising takes some creative thinking. First, how large is your school? Schools under 500 students need to look at different types of fundraisers than schools with 1000 students. Next, what are the other schools in the area doing as fundraisers? Too often, every school in the district is doing the same cookie dough, the same catalog, the same gift wrap fundraiser. Since people go to neighbors and co-workers, chances are they are tired of everyone doing these same things. Make a list of known fundraisers and the general times they appear , cross of any that are already doubled...you need to look for something else. Once you do that, decide if you want to do something to raise a large amout of funds at one time or if doing several smaller fundraisers throughout the year would work better. For the library, you can have a book fair (Scholastic does in school fairs. Borders and Barnes and Noble do in -store school nights for individual schools). In this case, you almost always get a better deal taking product over cash. Book fairs can provide thousands of dollars in books, tech equipment and reference materials for your new library. I would pair that with a buy-a-brick or wall-of-donars program. Parents, teachers, family members can purchase bricks, plaques or something similar (there are programs that will handle it all or you can develop somethine on your own..a quilt square program with the donar paying for a customized square on a quilt that will hang in the library..chances are you can find parents to volunteer to work on the quilt) with the profits going towards the libraray. Set the prices so a family could do a brick or square for each child if possible. If your school is smaller, there are some very cool art to product programs out there. Children draw a design and parents can have it put on any nmber of products (good to run for the holidays). This canbe done for any size school BUT it will take a lot of co-ordination to make it work well.
As for smaller programs to run throughout the year...BoxTops for Education, Campbell Soup labels, local grocery store programs that donate percentages of purchases back to the schools (Staples has this as well). As for the snack program, I would try local business sponsorship as a way to get it off the ground. Establish a committee to work up a letter and list of contacts with local businesses, chariatable groups and retailers asking for thier help. The letter must include a description of the program, why you have decided to take this on as a school and contact information. Keep it to one side of a type written page. Send copies to corporate headquarters as well as local locations of major chains. Make a list of who you have sent them two and be sure to make follow up calls. With luck, you can get enough donations to give you time for the fundraisers to produce for the programs future (or set up standing donations from business to supplement or even run the program).

My brother did a fundraiser for his NJROTC through elemonade stand. I remember the stuff they stole was more than the traditional candy and wrapping paper. They were actually selling things like grill cleaners, pot holders, taco trays other household stuff etc. It did have the original candy and other stuff. He actually had more buyers than he ever did because people realized that they were actually going to use this stuff.
