This goes out to anyone. About 2 and a half years ago someone i slept with became pregnant and I was told that it was my child. Approximatley 6 or more months ago i found out from a paternity test that i am not the father. Now i want to know how i can remove my name from the original birth certificate so nothing comes back later to haunt me.

Contact the County Clerk or Registrar of Births and explain the situation.Ask what you need to do. This varies from place to place but odds are pretty good it will involve a court of some kind.

I would contact the registrar of Births etc in the county where the child was born. Explain that you were named on the certificate but that a paternity test shows you are not the father, and ask how the record can be amended.

Going in to "talk to someone and explain the situation" is just not going to do it. Can you imagine the "Births and Records" office when you walk in and say "Uh, gee, I'm not really the father, can you change that?" If it were that easy, don't you think that a lot of the deadbeat dads out there would have thought of this?

No, sorry. You will have to petition the court. A birth certificate is a legal document, filed with the court clerk's office. the ONLY way to get the change is to go to court and request it.

Get a lawyer, or perhaps one of those 'law advice centers' can help you to file the papers.

Contact the office of Births, Deaths and Marriages. I'm sure if you approach them with the proof they should be able to sort something out.

Go to your county clerks office and make sure you take the DNA results that say that you are not the father.
