If the fire is raging, why not just set a couple of hoses shooting rooster tails between the houses to protect them and let the house burn to ashes so the cleanup is easier?

Are you serious? Is every house supposed to be completely demolished and removed after a fire? Much of a building's structure can remain perfectly sound if the fire is stopped early enough.

The house is screwed, but alot of family heirlooms and keepsakes can be saved. So since we got the hoses going, why not?

You sound like the all volunteer fire department we use to have in a small town I lived in. We used to boast that they never lost a foundation.
