We're going camping in the rockies, Arapahoe National Forest. There's Golden Gate State Park with fishing facilities nearby our campground but I havent been fishing in years and have no idea what I'm fishing for, what kind of bait to use, what kind of line to buy... The kids picked out their favourite zebco reel and rod sets, so I at least have THAT.. Any ideas?

When you go to buy your bait, ask what is good to fish for and what kind of bait you need. No big deal. That is the fun of it. So what if you make mistakes? The important thing is tht you are spending time with your kids. All the mistakes you might make will make great, long lasting fun memories for you and your kids. Don't try and be perfect. Just be fun. Admit that you don't really know and need some help. So what? Have a great time and bring a camera!!!!

You at least have the hardware to go fishing... now you just need the bait, hooks, weights, etc. I would definitely suggest going to the local baitshop. I would call the campground ahead of time, tell them you're coming, and that you'll need their help. My guess that is if you using a casting reel (Zebco), you'll need the following in order from top of the line, to the end of the line.

1. Bobber stopper
2. Bead (prevents stopper from getting in the bobber)
3. Bobber (slip bobber)
4. Weight (use a splitshot, put on your line, crimp with pliers)
5. Hook (use a smaller hook, like a 5/0 for panfish)
6. Nightcrawler on hook (depending on your kids' ages, cutting off pieces may not be comfortable... do it yourself, be the hero!)

The bobber stopper needs to be set at the depth you want fish. If you're fishing in 5 feet of water, set it at 4 feet. The bobber will slide up the line until the bead hits the stopper. That lets the hook suspend in the water. The weight helps keep the line straight and invisible to fish. The hook needs to tied on... there are a variety of different ways of doing this, but you can get help from the baitshop guys.

All in all, awesome job taking your kids fishing. It is truly something that you can do your whole life. Remember that kids have a short attention span, so bring a couple other things for them to play with. Baseball mit, frisbee, etc. Don't forget the hats and sunscreen and have an awesome time!

As mentioned below, make it fun for the kids and try to keep them interested, let them cast their own line, and reel it in as much as they want (they tend to be really impatient) while you your self be the patient one, if you hook a fish have them come over and reel it in giving them the credit, sooner or later they will catch on to your fishing style (patient) and start copying you, that's what kids do. Above all let them have fun, do not make them fish your way.
Use all the advise below, it's sound. I would use the bobbers, worms, and fish for sunfish, or bluegill, they tend to bite more regularly, docks, fallen trees, and other structure are good places for them to hide from bigger fish.
have fun, that's the important thing!

Sandwiches are continually a stable decision. you ought to even shrink them out like little fish so it gets the youngster extra in the temper. additionally, smaller snacks such as fruit or chips are extra suitable than finished blown foodstuff. something you're able to %. as a chilly lunch for college could relatively artwork for the fishing holiday. stable success fishin'!

Woo Hoo. Hats off to you. You are making the world a better place.

First of all get those Zebcos out of whatever they are packed in. Attach just a lead sinker to the end of the line and get the kids out in the yard practicing.

And I think you can take it from there.

Hey, have fun.

You didn't say how old the kids are but younger ones have a short attention span and quantity is more important than quality. If it is a pond or a lake, worms with a bobber (float) should do the trick. Especially if there is a boat dock where people throw bread and stuff out for the fish to eat.

If you want bigger fish, use bigger worms and throw it out farther.

Catfish(like deep water) are your best bet when with the kids. Get some chicken livers if you can handle it. If not get some good ole fashion night crawlers and go for bluegill(caught nearshore) or the occasional bass(close to weeds, near dropoff's or structures).

There should be a bait shop near the camp ground.
Ask them the type fish in the lake and which type of bait is best.
