What news are you reading? The planned attacks at Fort Dix were to be on the ground, the terrorist doctors in Britain used cars, and before that trains were attacked. In Iraq it is often car bombs, and I could give you a million other examples. Terrorists will use any tactic they can, including but not limited to airplanes.

When you think of what a huge cruse missile a modern commercial aircraft is it does not seem odd at all. Given men who are willing to die it is the most effect weapon you can steal.

No where to run. A captive audience. Large number of casualty's. If you can destroy confidence in flying as a means of transportation, you've financially crippled your target. It takes one hell of a long time to drive from New York to LA.

Airplanes are an easy way to get away. You can't get stopped until an F-16 gets next to you.
They can cause mass death, etc.
