I have a small one-bedroom apartment. What not-so-plain color will make it look spacious.

1] pick your three favorite colors [ say yellow, sage, and smoke blue ]
2] put one as main color in each room [ LR - blue with yellow, Kitchen - Yellow with green, Bedroom - green with blue. Bath can match either LR or Bed.
3] LR - butter yellow walls
a] blue carpet or rug
b] upholstery in blue/yellow print
c] curtains in blue/ yellow print, to match walls, or to match floor
d] throw pillows in the blue, the yellow, and a print of both
e] frame all artwork in similar color/material [ oak/walnut, brass/chrome, enamels ] so can be moved around later
f] add other small accessories in blue, yellow, and frame colors- vases, candles, flowerpots, lamps, knick-knacks
4] Kitchen -
a] yellow walls
b] small rug in green
c] curtains in yellow, green, print of both,or white/ivory with yellow and green
d] add towels, potholders, placemats in yellow, green, or print
e] try to keep counter items in the yellow, green, or white
5 Bedroom -
a] green walls
b] blue carpet or rug
c] bedspread of green, blue, maybe a little yellow
d] curtains to match bedding or walls
e] throw pillows in bedding fabric, green or blue
f] small accessories in green, blue [ see LR ]
6] Bath -
a] walls in green
b] shower curtain in green, blue, maybe yellow
c] rug, trash bin in blue
d] accessories [ soap dish, dispenser, toothbrush holder, etc. ] in blue, green, or yellow
e] add short, fat candle in pretty holder
f] small fake or real plant
Just use these ideas in your favorite colors!
Decide if you want to use white or ivory for light neutral; and black or coffee brown for dark neutral.
Keeping color flow from rrom to room will make it attractive and 'finished', but not 'busy'.
Good luck, and have fun!

Here's the trick I used in the smallest room in my house (a bedroom about the size of my old dorm room). Now you can pick your own colors, but you'll get the idea.

I painted the room 2 colors: the first color was very pale - in my case pink, but like I said use the colors you like. Pink covers 3 walls of the room, then the 4th wall is a dark contrasting color - a dark, warm brown. The brown is on the wall with the window and makes the room look much bigger than it is.

You could use any color combination that you like (just about) and it looks really good. Suggestions might be cream and green tea, or pale yellow and cobalt blue, even eggshell and a warm brown, whatever you like.

The color that will make your bedroom look the biggest is robin's egg blue. Not only will it make the room look bigger, but it is the perfect relaxation color for a bedroom. Here's a link to give you an idea of just what robin's egg blue is:

Keep in mind that the computer will not give you the actual color... you need to see it in a paint chip...

To make the room appear even bigger, paint the trim the same color as the walls. Use the same blue but 3 shades lighter for the ceiling.

Enjoy your new large and airy room!

Pale, pastel, neutral or cool colors provide your space with an open feeling. Cool colors are typically the best to use to make your space feel larger in comparison to warm colors. Cool colors (i.e. light blue) tend to trick your eyes into thinking the walls are further away, whereas warm colors make them feel closer.

You can also combine cool colors to keep it lively and not so boring. sing high gloss and semi-gloss paint where it is feasible will reflect light, making the room appear larger.

If you need a focal point, paint only one wall a rich color, leaving the rest neutral.

Painting insets, such as wall nooks, bookcase backs, and between shelves, a richer color will draw the eye out of the middle of the room -creating a sense of space.

Adding mirrors will provide your home with a feeling of open space.

Hope this helps. :)

You have to use a light color - dark colors make rooms look smaller. Choose your favorite color then pick a really pale shade of it. Then you can use all the accessories you like. However, if you want to try something different - why not go for a lovely fresh soft mint color - then you can either really "pretty it up" with white and baby pink french chic style furnishings and decor, or you can modernise it with natural woods, stones and natural wool furnishings and decor. That would be my favorite choice.

Any light color will give the illusion that your apartment is spacious. Go with off white, or light beige, or a very light pastel color.

Khaki, coffee, or cream. HGTV is using these colors a lot with blues and turqoise.
