Some things I have found helpful are to go for a long walk daily, preferably in the morning. It helps you think clearly and get the endorphins working. Go to bed reasonably early and get a good nights sleep too. Avoid alcohol and too much caffeine.

I consider "not being depressed" different than being "happy". I know that sounds odd but, for me, not being depressed means I can get out of bed in the morning. I'm happy when I'm not experiencing depression and I'm able to appreciate the things I love in life.

To keep my mood up:

I exercise at least 3 times per week:
I go to the pool and soak up the sunshine (wearing a sunscreen, of course):
See a friend for lunch, dinner or a movie (I prefer to visit with one or two friends rather than attend parties because with only a few of us we can talk about what is going on in our lives);
Stay in touch with family and friends via the phone rather than e-mail.
Do volunteer work. When I am doing something for someone else, I stop thinking about myself and my problems for a short time.

Get good exercise. Eat well. Sleep well. Stay active. Laugh. Get 20 minutes of sunlight a day. Vitamin D helps.

Do things that make you happy. Smile. Volunteer to help someone else in need.

Crap can make us unhappy, but learning how to cope helps. Also, making good decisions so we aren't creating crap helps too.

Eat healthy, eating wrong can really create depressing mood swings. Get exercise, that increases the endorphins in your brain and those are the "happy feelings" you have and exercise can create that.

For immediate relief, I turn on some invigorating music and start to move, slowly at first, then faster letting it pick me up, spin me around, energizing me higher and higher, until I feel the release of endorphins and feeling free.

Hang around friends with positive attitudes, get plenty of sunshine, get enough sleep, exercise, eat healthy, and talk to a counselor or pastor if necessary.

I've actually heard that getting some sun boosts the mentality.
