Actually there are " very minor" similarities. Communism is a social organization in which goods are held in common. It's members advocate common ownership of means of production and distribution of products of industry based on need.
Atheism however is simply the act of being an atheist or one who denies the existence of God. Atheists can be part of an organized social construct such as the American Atheist Association or simply individuals who disbelieve in a God but are not part of any atheist or any communist organization.
Succinctly put, communists could be atheist but atheists don't have to be communists.
In fact a Christian could be communist and still believe in God.
Interestingly enough the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints (Mormon Church) advocated a form of communism. They called it the "United Order" or sometimes referred to as the "Bishops Storehouse". It has now been abandoned by the church but earlier members believed it was equatable to put all there crops and man made products in a store house and the bishop should disperse goods and food in accordance with the needs of each member. Mormons are considered by many to be Christian.

I see far more similarities between Communism and Islam.
Both rely on those at the top, be it party bosses or religious leaders to tell them right from wrong.
Both do well with poorly educated fanatical followers who are willing to do anything for the cause, even die for it.
Both seem to do better in a nation where there is a dictator or king or president with total authority at the top.
Both are of the view that the ends justifies the means.
Both feel true peace will come when everyone agrees with them and embraces their views.
Both are the enemies of democracy and freedom.

Desi: I think, that Atheism - the concept thereof, leans more towards, the individual not having the opportunity YET, to become drawn to God, the Father (John, chapter 6, verse 44) and therefore, he or she is not responsible for being an "Atheist" in his or her views. Communism is born from poverty - where the masses have been oppressed by the wealthy and mass together, under the common belief of "equality". A Christian is any person, who has been drawn to God, the Father, through Jesus Christ, via the Holy Spirit and has a spiritual relationship with Him based on GRACE. I, myself, was once, an Atheist.
You pose an interesting question !

Atheism is nothing more than the rejection of God it has nothing to do with creating a utopia form of society.
Communism is an attempted political regime in which a small number of people (bureaucracies) help keep the rest of the people from attaining class division. By maintaining 2 or 3 classes workers, military (and artisans [North Korea])

Are you talking about Communism as an ideology - the simple idea of 'from each according to his ability; to each according to his need'? Central planning for the good of all etc.?
Or do you mean the wretched implementations of Communism seen in the real world?
They're very different, as most political ideas are from their real-world implementations.
Look at Capitalism - everyone's supposed to be comfortable and fair. Well, hardy har har.

No Communism with an upper-case C is like Christianity because both are based on a central authority that monitors your every move and hands out severe punishment for minor infractions.
Lowercase c communism is like Christianity in that it espouses egalitarian ideals at the expense of individual monetary comfort.
I don't see atheism as resembling either the political or economic/philosophical brands of communism.

Atheism is only about not believing in God(s). It is not a philosophy, epistemology, religion, or belief system. There is not set of shared beliefs or behaviors that connect and unite Atheists other than the God thing.

I didn't set out to become a minority, or relish being an underdog. I just thought about the facts and here we are today.

I don't see the connection between not believing in a superior being and supporting "the underdog". I think you are stretching it a lot.
