Catholicism is a part of Christianity just like Protestantism is a part of Christianity. There are many denominations and sect whith Christianity particularly Protestantism. But at the end of the day it is all pretty much a part of Christianity as they believe that Jesus Christ is the lord and savior who died on the cross for our sins. Of course there are differences in doctrines but it's all pretty much the same thing.

Catholicism is a branch of Christianity along with Presbyterianism and many others. Catholicism is a distinct branch of Christianity as Catholics are the only Christians that believe in the Pope. Catholics also have very elaborate Rituals and Traditions (yes, capitals) which they believe are just as important as the Bible.

Well I could have sworn Catholics ARE a branch of Christianity...I know I'd have some friends a bit peeved over the suggestion that they aren't.

Edit: Wow, some people are rude and very self righteous, and very clueless...the Catholics I know are all into god and Jesus just as much as any other Christian. Well, maybe not like the overboard nutty types.

Catholics are christians and it really boggles my mind as to why the non-denominational christian community differs on this. I grew up Catholic but now attend non-denominational church and it bother's me. But my opinion is that the Catholics themselves have caused this problem as the majority will answer when asked if they are Christians will say they are Catholics. And it disappoints me when I hear them asnwer that way because that shows that they haven't been taught correctly.

For anyone who is really serious about this question I have a 5 page MS Word document which compares the Bible and what it teaches with the Roman Catholic Church and what it teaches.

Bible verses are listed so you can look it all up.

And there are numbers (1235) in parenthesis all over which are paragraph numbers in the new Catholic Catechism book.

Since this won't fit in this little window, the only way I can send this to you is if you send me your regular E-mail address.

Then I'll send it to you and you can read it and decide for yourself.

"What separates us as believers in Christ is much less than what unites us." (Pope John XXIII)

Almost all important doctrine is completely agreed upon between Catholic Christians and other Christians.

Here is the joint declaration of justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):

By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works.

There are many minor doctrine issues and some major cultural traditional differences which, I believe, do not matter that much.

A Catholic worships and follows Christ in the tradition of Catholicism which, among other things, recognizes that Christ made Peter the leader of His new Church and Pope Benedict XVI is Peter's direct successor.

With love in Christ.

Catholics are Trinitarian Christians. The Roman Catholic Church is one of the denominations of Christianity (and is, statistically, the largest Christian denomination).
