That's B.S. They're yanking your chain to force you/scare you into staying. What gym is it? If you're paying them on a regular basis for the membership, it's your money and you have the right to choose something else. The only way I can think that would be otherwise is if you signed some kind of contract that requires you to have a membership for some length of time...and I don't know of any gym that would do that that you wouldn't have paid up front for. If you want a convenient excuse, just tell them honestly that you're a new college student and you simply don't have the money to pay for their membership, so unless they're willing to give you a free one, you'll go out and do your own thing. Be firm. Keep telling them "no" no matter what else they offer or cajole or try to get you to change your mind with. Eventually, stubbornness will win out even if they shoot down all of your reasons. You don't even have to give them a reason at all, just keep telling them no. If they seriously refuse to cancel your membership and keep billing you, threaten to take them to court. There has to be some kind of harassment or something here that they can be sued for, because it just doesn't add up.

Some gyms will let you quit or suspend based on financial hardship.

tell them that you're moving to go to college so you no longer need a membership since you won't be there to use it.
