No, I am NOT an atheist who lies about being a Christian! I am a mature woman who finds it better NOT to lie!
I am also from Texas. Have been all my life!
I would love to know why you felt as though you would be burned at the stake if you didn't lie? What were you doing here to feel that way?
OR, are you saying that Texas is very much, BIBLE BELT? Please clarify!

I don't think I ever pretended to be Christian although I did try my hardest to be one but it just isn't for me. Religion in general just isn't for me. Now I don't advertise that I am an atheist but I definitely don't hide it. But I know what you mean. I live in a part of South Carolina that is pretty much smack dab in the middle of the freaking Bible Belt and I think that most people would like to burn me at the stake!!! I can't tell you how many times I am berated about my being an atheist.

Unfortunately, despite what they might profess to the contrary, many religionists (particularly so-called "fundamentalists") feel threatened by those who do not profess a belief in a "higher power". Their reactions typically range from attempts to ignore to convert or - if conversion is not possible - discredit and ostracize. This is due to natural "heard instinct" - the "black sheep" is always an aberation that must be eliminated to preseve the heard's status quo. So yes, I lie about my "religion" to religionists all the time out of the necessity for self-preservation. I'd prefer to be a live wolf in sheep's clothing than a hungry or dead one.

No, I am quite frank with people, I don't follow any religion because I, for one, believe that religion is the cause of war and death (on a world scale) and secondly, I would rather not sit in a church Sunday morning and listen to a priest (or w/e) tell me what is a sin and what is not. Plus in Canada it appears as religion is a fading cause, and those who are somewhat religious don't even go to church. Nobody ever gives me a hard time about my perspective, they usually agree or not be bothered, whether they be Hindu, Christian, Muslim or Buddhist.

Well, no. Actually, I'm not an atheist, I'm wiccan which a lot of Christians think is worse. Generally I don't talk about religion at all but if someone asks me if I'm Christian I say "no" end of subject.

I'm not, but I did have that conversation with one over a beer some time ago.
It's sad that people feel they need to hide some part of themselves for no good reason.

Nope. I don't go out of my way to point it out, but I don't lie about it either. And I live right in the middle of Texas. I just have guns too.

Haha, yes, they don't call it the "Bible Belt" for no reason. I think there are alot of people out there who call themselves christian just because they are raised that way and don't really consider what they really truly believe. My dad, for instance, calls himself a methodist (a type of christian). When I explained deism to him, though, he said that's closer to what he actually believes in.
