The time of the event/reception is very important as well as the level of formality. If it is a the semi-formal wedding, check out the dresses in Jcrew's special occasion section for some ideas (a bunch are on sale right now for some great prices). If the invite says "black tie" and is at night, you should wear a long gown. If any other time or does not indicate "Black Tie" for an evening wedding, a knee-length or tea-length dress is appropriate. The "Little Black Dress" is usually appropriate as well, but feel free to wear various colors. White and Ivory should be avoided.
If the wedding is during the day, a little more casual, and in early September, you could get away with a nice sundress dressed up a little bit.
Another possibility is checking out the webpages for Macys, Nordstroms, Ann Taylor, etc. They have options for selecting dresses and I think all of them have a "guest of wedding" filter.

It depends on what time the wedding is an how formal it will be.
Day time weddings tend to be less formal than evening weddings. For a day wedding a nice dress will do fine. For evening you may want a cocktail dress or more formal dress.
If you are not the dress type, there are some nice pants suits or sprakly type tops with pants and dressy shoes that woul be nice.
Check what kind of wedding it will be and you will have a better idea of what to wear, but you definitly want to dress up a little.
A lot of department stores are having sales right now so you may want to go shopping soon!

More details:
Where (church, outside, beach, wedding hall, etc)?
What time?
Did they state what the attire would be in the invite?
I would call up someone in the wedding party or their family and ask if it is formal/semiformal/casual then work from there.

DON'T wear white!
Given the time of year and the probable weather, I'd suggest a black, knee-length dress with simple, tasteful jewelry, and wear heels. Your boyfriend should wear a suit and tie--even to the church!
Enjoy! :-)
