In many states the Highway Patrol is the State Police and as such they give tickets anywhere in the state.

He did, didn't he? Highway Patrol Officers go by different bounds then do local officers - called state borders.

To correct some of the answers: Tickets can only be legally served within a jurisdiction (or sometimes slightly outside of if in pursuit or if an agreement is made with other jurisdictions). A municipal officer can serve a ticket within city limits; a sheriff's deputy inside the county, a township officer within the township, etc.

Of course the highway patrol officer can do that. After all, you were driving on the highway, and the officer did find just cause to chase you down, off the highway, and give you a ticket. That's their JOB is to give tickets and arrest criminals. What was your ticket for? Speeding, illegal lane change,or driving in the carpool lane? Just curious. Then I would rest my case...LOL

The series CHiPS does wonders..LOL.

oh yes! in fact they can give it to you even if they are out of their jurisdiction...they dont just patrol the highways. so even if they arent on the highway that doesnt make them out of their jurisdiction...they patrol routes and back roads too. they can even give you a ticket in the city limits

Yes, they obviously can because they obviously do. Keep one eye on your speedometer and your other one on the rear view mirror. Also, watch out for white lines painted across the roads. Your speed is being timed by cops in planes overhead as you go from line to line.

The term "good guys" is a matter of both perspective and experience.

Yes, of course. Highway patrol consists of sworn officers just like those in city and county departments. Their job is to enforce the law, regardless of where the violation occurred.

In most states Highway Patrol is another name for State Police or State Troopers, whose primary goal is to enforce state law.

Usually State troopers are state-wide in jurisdiction, and can arrest anyone, anywhere within their state for any infraction of the law.
