My best friend has 2 older Siberian Huskies and every time she lets them out to exercise the flies keep bothering their ears, it is at the point where they are bleeding, she has tried numerous sprays with no luck, do you have any suggestions to keep the flies away and also what can she use to heal the ends of the ears so they dont become infected? I know the vet gave her ointment but the flies still mess with the ears after that?? Any help would be great. I never had this problem where I live but she lives in town, could that be the reason?

This is actually a very common problem, especially with outdoor dogs. I have a foster dog right now with the same problem and everytime she shakes her head, the wounds crack open. The garlic trick will help eventually, but to help the wounds heal, you need to put the ointment on and wrap the ears (you may have to wrap the whole head). Don't make it too tight and you can use vet wrap to keep it in place. Most dogs don't like it but will tolerate it. Try to keep them distracted while their ears are wrapped (chew toys, play, etc.). Good luck!

One of our large animal vet friends said that a client of hers has 24 German Shepherds and was having a really bad problem with this. She started to put a drop of Advantix on the tips of the ears, and the rest on the dog as directed, and the flies were repelled....she's had great success. It's worth a try I'd say.

Garlic. Really if you give your dog a garlic pill once a day it will keep them away. It will take a week before it will start working in the mean time you must try to keep the flies off the wounds because the can lay eggs in them.

For horses, we use sprays and ear nets to keep pests from driving horses nuts. Unfortunately, bringing the horses inside isn't an option. LOL Get some one handy to sew up a pair of ear nets for you.

This horse person swears by a great product called Swat by Farnam. It comes in pink and clear. We actually like pink because we know where it is. It is gunky and stays put. Flies hate it and it heals also. My dog also swears by it. She hates fly strike season.
