Now that I have established that our new kitten is indeed a female, it worries me. She is 13 weeks old and our other cat is 11 years old. Right now my older cat is still hissing and growling, but we've only had the kitten for a few days. I know it will take some time for the older one to accept the kitten..... but... Are they going to be able to eventually get along, or just tolerate each other even though they are both females?
(The oldest is fixed and we plan on doing the same for the kitten when she's old enough.)

Ive heard that rearranging furniture, thereby making the Old bag of bones (Abby) and the cute little Clutch redefine "territory" since they are territorial and that seems to be most of the issue, helps alot.

Who knows, but Im not breaking my back moving the bigscreen t.v.s in the living room and bedroom again.

We can see what happens in 3 weeks though.

That is the $64,000 question. It sort of mirrors my experience, and the bottom line is probably yes. It may take over a month to get a real feel for what is going on. Your older cat is resenting that you have brought a change in her life, and cats hate changes. (My cats have always been females, and more than one.) As long as there has been no real aggression, things should settle down all right.

But there is another thing to consider. You have brought a turbo charged ball of energy in to a household that has a veritable senior citizen. My suggestion, and what I did, is to bring in another young kitten close in age to your female of 13 weeks. They will take out the energy on each other, allowing your older cat to adjust. For me, it has worked out beautifully. While when I only brought in a younger cat to the older cat, there was resentment all the time, although no blood was spilled.

They will eventually get along. The 11 year old is used to having all the attention and not having to share anything. Now new kitty is here and it was kind of a new situation.

Besides if cats could not co exist there would be no crazy cat ladies out there, right?!? j/k

If female cats couldn't co-exist we wouldn't have owners with multi cat households.

It takes up to 3 weeks for things to smooth down, as both learn the routine of the other. Even if they end up disliking each other (which is rare) they'll still share the same home.

They will be able to get along fine, and you are right it may take some time. I have 16 cats, most of them are strays that were dumped here and are of all ages and moved in at different times. They are all spayed and neutered and have formed one large family.

All animals get a little upset when you bring a new animal into their territory. It will be fine, they will adjust to each other. Mine always did.
