Do real artists count on inspiration? Because, I've been known to make beautiful paintings and works of art when I'm truly in the mood and have an idea and am inspired. But, without it, my drawings suck. Do I really have any talent? Should artists be able to make masterpieces WITHOUT inspiration?

No, artists do not always count on inspiration. As you said, inspiration doesn't get along the artist way everyday, so it would be hard to work only when inspiration hits.
Mostly when that happens artists have a notebook with them to write down ideas, drawings, etc. Later they will develop this ideas to paintings.
Talent has to be developed, it's not only a gift, it's the result of years and years of practice.
Later on, artists tend to work after previous works, for example, they make a painting and they say "ah, the light worked good on it, but it could be better if it...." then they start a new painting to see how the light could have worked better, and maybe in this other painting they say "ah, but that figure alone would be better if it was a crowd instead, with that light" and so on... they keep exploring and developing their ideas.
Our teacher at art school told us "An artists always paints the same painting".

Hope that helped.

Okay, think about this:

ONE: What doesn't make YOU a real artist? Maybe you do it for a living, or maybe it's just a hobby. Whichever, as long as you aren't using pink plastic brushes, crappy power paints and painting on daddy's printer paper from work, I'd consider you a true and real artist. Seriously.

TWO: Now that we've nailed that, where else would the feel of the painting come from? Of course when you aren't in the mood your drawings suck! Where's the flow that you get from inspiration? How can you get the work of art to not just be a work of art; how can you get it to jump off the page and make people believe in your art? Without inspiration, artists would have nothing! NOTHING!

Okay, I may be spouting nonsense, but here's the deal:
artist + paper + pencil = bad work
artist + paper + pencil + inspriation = good work!

You have true talent as an artist, so don't doubt yourself! Have fun!

It depends how the artist work out their method. Some people can draw and paint with or without one. Being a real artist they may count on inspiration or research or ideas they have, and they will work on it based on their ideas or inspiration.

The answer is no. Your view and method are common between artist which they also want inspiration as motivation to create artworks as they like. Every artists work different ways and methods and your method is reflecting your personality and approach of art making. So it doesn't mean you don't have talent. You already have a talent by your approach of art making.

Some artist who create famous artworks and don't have inspiration that they create one by exploring and drawing out their ideas to find and create one they like. Once I don't have inspiration, I always doodle my drawings until it form idea I want to paint or draw.

Others already have they can draw out perfectly with their uncanny knack, they use it to explore and create a new artworks. I have a friend who is an artist, he has a knack drawing similar objects (houses) as he refer to the picture he was looking.

Every artists work different ways and methods to find or create inspiration and artworks. Because art is an subjective topic how everyone define it and create their own artworks.

"REAL" artists probably need inspiration. SURVIVING artists learn to produce without "the muse". I paint when I am "inspired" but it's AMAZING what I can accomplish when I just MAKE myself go to the easel and BEGIN. I paint for pleasure when I am "inspired" and often I can sell it to people who "see" what I was expressing at that time they appreciate it and want to own it. I paint to pay the bills by doing portraits. You will more than likely never get rich, but you can survive by MAKING yourself go to the easel (drawing board, potter's wheel, etc.) and PRODUCE!! Otherwise you will just be a waitress, cashier, sales clerk who happens to paint (photograph, sculpt, whatever).

If i had to count on inspiration for every painting iv'e done i probably wouldn't be able to paint what people hire me to paint. When i do a painting for someone i pretend i am painting it for myself and really try to do the best job i can, for example, if i am doing a painting with a western theme ( not really my kind of stuff), i will go to the library and check out books related to that. If you have done beautiful paintings, you have talent. You now have to train yourself to paint what people would be willing to hire you for. My art can be checked out at hellosanantonio.com under artist name ''Guerro''.
