Boxing was called a poverty sport because of the times. You didn't need alot to box. You didn't need an expensive bag, you could get a sack and grain to hit. Training of course years ago was nothing compared to today. Even though boxing is one of the hardest and toughest sports, you don't need alot of money to train. Some rope to jump. A bag to hit. You can run for free. Chew some pine to solidify the jaw muscles. Push ups, sit ups, what expensive equipment do you need??? That is why it's called a poverty sport.
Train hard? Go to a gym, and follow your trainers plan.

Boxing has become too commercialized and a lot of people, espcially rich people, are taking up the sport for fitness purposes. This explains high-end gyms mushrooming everywhere. Most of these gyms cater the rich (and the famous) that they offer all sorts of amenities that tend to pamper their customers. No wonder memberships in these gyms are too expensive. The REAL gyms, however, where real fighters go to are kinda dank and seedy and reeking from liniment odor. These are surely cheap and you'll definitely learn how to fight here.

Boxing is a way out of poverty for poor people, but the only ones guaranteed to make money are everyone except the boxers. It has always seemed to me that there are lots of people feeding off of the fighters and the fighter's share is not what it should be.

Boxing gyms in America are expensive because now at days they are places for rich snobs to go to look tough and impress chicks. Health clubs in general are super expensive and are just for pretty people looking pretty and pretending to exercise. It is not that case in other parts of the world. In the parts of the world that produce the most fighters it is a poverty sport like basketball and football are in America (hence our free basketball courts and baseball fields every place).

it's considered a poverty sport because so many guys train fighters for years and never make any money off them, the average trainer will definitely need a job besides training to survive and back in the 70's and 80's you could pay a annual membership fee of about $20.00-$25.00 but now most gyms want on average $25.00 each month for member fees. most coaches and city ran rec. center only got a lil above minimum wage pay for training guys
